The ‘phone call’ is about a truck driver whose truck broke down in the middle of the road. He then goes to a house with simple intentions of phoning the market and inform them of what happened. But the simple phone call gets him assaulted by an old woman. Who is it to blame for what happened? I believe it is the truck driver himself who is to blame. He couldn’t go to the nearest house because a dog was in his path, so he went to Mrs Timothy house instead. The truck driver failed to identify the fear and the suspicion in her face and her voice. ‘I mean it was real strange. It was like she was scared or something’ this was a quote taken from the text that proves that Mrs timothy was scared but the truck driver still didn’t take much notice. He didn’t understand how a lonely old woman would react when a big young man who was a complete stranger to her asked if he could come into her house and make a phone call. The truck driver also didn’t realise that this was someone else’s house and that they never met before. He went around the house, ill mannered, looking for an ashtray. He found something that he thought was an ashtray but could have been something else that was important to Mrs Timothy. When he clumsily dropped the ashtray and went to pick it up it seemed like he had been trying to steal something. That’s when things turned sour. Mrs Timothy took out a kitchen knife and threatened him. The truck driver thought it was a maniac but in fact it was a frightened old woman frightened because a big young man seemed like he was up to no good. ‘I now I want you to leave. I want you to get out of my house’. This quote was taken from the text. The truck driver still didn’t get out when Mrs Timothy told him to. He also didn’t realise the seriousness in her voice. He should have got out immediately because this wasn’t his house. In the end Mrs Timothy drew out a kitchen knife and threatened him.…
