UHL Scholarship Essay When most people think about a significant experience as something like; studying abroad, taking vacations, or meeting new people. Now while I have met many types of people and traveled quite a bit, none of these experiences have been nearly as significant to me as my childhood. I lived in a small, falling apart, purple house in the heart of Bessemer that was perfect because it is all we could afford. This house and neighborhood forced me to be resourceful and it taught me that nothing in my life is going to come without hard work. Those lessons crafted me into the industrious, diligent, and determined person that I am today. To me, when I was young, my neighborhood was great. I had a loyal group of friends to run around with and attempt to stay out of trouble. We dreamed of future riches and success without any idea on how to get there and more specifically how to get out of that neighborhood. There were six of us. Two of us are dead, one has been in and out of kid’s homes and detention centers for juvenile offenders since seventh grade. The last three of us are still in school. Take it as an example of some of adversity that I had to overcome to get to this point. It is these various road blocks that I believe have set me up to realize my potential and this scholarship would be key to that. At every turn in my life I have made the best of my current situation and tried to adapt and succeed however I can. Of course I have failed and I will continue to do that in life, but I believe that part of success is dealing with struggle, failure, and adversity while turning it into something positive. Malcolm X said it best, “There is no better than adversity. Every defeat, every heartbreak, every loss, contains its own seed, its own lesson on how to improve your performance next
