Unit 1 UK Travel and Tourism Sector

Three main types of tourism:

Domestic tourism

Domestic tourism is travelling in your own country for tourist purposes. For example a British couple going on a holiday in Brighton is domestic tourism. Organisations involved in domestic tourism are airlines such as Easy Jet and British Airways which often do discounts on domestic flights, also tour operators such as Contiki and Thomas Cook which are offering domestic holidays.

Outbound tourism

Outbound tourism is when someone goes out of their country; it could be a business or a holiday trip. An example of outbound tourism is a UK citizen going on a holiday to Cuba. Many tour operators and airlines are offering outbound tourism as it is

For example a Chinese family on a holiday in London. Organisations involved in inbound tourism are airlines such as British Airways, American Airlines, Emirates and etc. Business tour operators such as American Express and tour operators such as Kuoni are also involved in the inbound tourism. Organisations such as Visit Britain are also playing an important role because they are attracting customers from all around the world to visit UK.

Reasons for travel

1. Leisure
Leisure tourism is travelling to a new environment or country to spent time away from work. People travel to see different historic sites, enjoy different weather and learn others cultures. 2. Business
Business travellers attend conventions, meetings, exhibitions, congresses, business events, incentive travel and corporate hospitality. They travel to reach their clients who might be overseas. 3. Visiting friends and relatives (VFR)
Known as VFR is one of the three mean reasons when people travel to visit friends or relatives ,either Uk or aboard.The reason of this could be; they have emigrated to another country or have moved away for work or study.

Examples:

a) A British couple going on holiday in Singapore for a week. b) Two colleagues from Netherland on a sales trip in London. c) A Spanish Family going to Madrid to visit their
