The type of paragraph you use will depend on your purpose for writing. To entertain readers or express themselves, writers use narration or description. Exposition and narration are used to inform readers about something. Writers use persuasion to influence people. Several paragraphs written about the same subject might be very different, depending on why the writers wrote them. The four paragraphs that follow all talk about roller coasters, but in different ways.

* Narrative paragraphs

Tell about an event or series of events, usually in chronological order. Most short stories and newspaper articles are examples of narrative writing. [

* Descriptive paragraphs
Do exactly what you think they do; they describe a person, an object, or a scene in detail. [

Example: Rising ominously from the frozen Muskegon landscape, it is a sight exhilarating and unnerving, this man-made mountain range of wood. Under a cold grey sky, the soul of this creation waits in silent hibernation for the warmth of spring. Then, when the clouds part, the snows melt, and the earth awakens, it shall be silent no more. A gorgeous, textbook example of the classic “out-and-back” roller coaster, Shivering Timbers will be Michigan’s largest coaster. Even more, this humongous lumber wonder will rank as the third longest wooden coaster in the United States.

Example:
Your knuckles are white, your palms are drenched, and it feels like your dentist has just switched on the drill. Worse still, as the click of the chain pulls the train skyward, you glance back at the gum-chewing guy who strapped you in and wonder what possessed you to put your life in the hands of a kid you wouldn’t trust to wrap your sandwich. That’s when you realize: This is all a big mistake. Only now you’re at the top, staring into the air, the track seems to have vanished, and the car teeters on the edge of nothingness. Then gravity takes hold and

    position with the Division of Economic Security (DES)?’ this is my response. Over the years I have held several different office type jobs. I started out as a temporary worker for DES, in a file room in the Child Support Division. I was required to build files for different units; maintain a log of the files that were being received, transferred out, and sent to the warehouse. The files sent to the warehouse were given a secondary number by the warehouse, in case a file had to be retrieved; this was the tracking system that allowed the warehouse to locate the appropriate file. I worked in DES as a Customer Service Representative (CSR) for the Family Assistance Administration (FAA). As a CSR I was required to perform a wide range of clerical duties; distributing mail/inter-office mail and faxes, pulling and filing files in the file room, registering/scheduling incoming applications, ensuring the case managers had their list of appointments for the day and the incoming paperwork that accompanied it, answering the switchboard to guide/answer incoming calls from consumers, and scan information the case managers had gathered from the consumers into the system. The position as a CSR proved tested my ability to multi-task and to prioritize and re-prioritize with the day to day changes.…

    I am applying for the ABA Therapist position at the Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD) because I feel the need to help Autistic children. When my younger sister had her second baby, I felt in love with him from the time I saw him. He was a normal and healthy baby. After a year or so we begin to notice changes in his behavior and attitude. After many visits to the doctor my nephew was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, a type of Autism, apparently very common in children. I spent the majority of my free time researching and investigating his condition. He started receiving occupational and behavioral therapy; his ABA therapist would come home twice a week. He enjoyed his therapy sessions very much; I saw how dedicated his therapist was and realized how important these sessions are for an autistic child. My nephew is a normal and very smart child, but with special needs. He is my inspiration in life, being so close to him helped me decide what career to pursue, that's how I enrolled at the University of Phoenix and got my degree in psychology while I was a volunteer at the Autism Diagnostic Clinic at Phoenix Children's Hospital. My biggest passion is to help autistic children like my nephew. I'm ready to become a member of the Center for Autism and Related Disorders, it would be a great honor to get the ABA Therapist position and start working with your…

    I slowly opened my eyes and began to panic. The roller coaster included a few more slopes of the same height which i got used to; then came the final challenge: the biggest hill on the ride. We slowly crept up the hill, I heard the cart’s wheel banging against the wooden tracks, my heart began pounding faster and faster, until we finally reached the top. I looked at my friends with an unpleasant view and looked back towards the front. Something overcame on the last hill because all of a sudden i calmed down and was ready to face my fear. I Looked around the park joyfully from my sky high view and enjoyed the slight breeze on my face. When the ride started to rush down the hill i kept my eyes open and even put my arms in the air. The whole way down I remember keeping my eyes open and actually enjoying the…

    On day, when I was ten years old I got up for school in the morning but unfortunately I got up late. When I went to where the bus should be stop I considered that I missed the bus. I remembered that there is a bus going late to school but it is in a far area from the place I live. So, I ran to that area hoping that the bus hadn't left yet. I ran to there with lots of ideas of the punishment that my father would give me if he knew. I reached where the bus should be stop but I hadn't seen it. From that point I considered that my father is going to punish me for not attending school. Without thinking, I walked crying to the school which is 7km far. Suddenly the sports teacher of our school passed by me and stopped to take me with him to school. I opened the door of his car and sat in the back seat. Along the trip to the school we didn't talk. Finally, when we arrived the school, I went laughing to my friends to tell them about that morning. From that day on, I've never missed the bus again.…
