Types of Grasses
Types of grasses. * Cool season grasses all thrive in northern areas, including Canada, as well as higher elevations farther south. The main growing period for cool-season grass is in spring and fall when soil temperature is 50 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit, and the air temperature is 60 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Come high summer, cool-season grasses go dormant unless regularly irrigated. Kentucky bluegrass, Bentgrass, Ryegrass, and the fescues are all cool-season grasses. * Warm season grasses grow best in southern regions. The main growing period for warm-season grass is in the summer when soil temperature is between 70 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit, and the air temperature is 80 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Warm-season grasses become dormant with the onset of cooler weather. The degree of tolerance of warm-season grasses varies by cultivar, but many turn straw-colored or light brown after the first frost. The Bermuda, St. Augustine, and Zoysia grasses are just a few species found in this group. * Transitional season grasses can adapt to the climate in the band across the country where north meets south. This zone extends from southern California, east through Oklahoma and Kansas, to the eastern coastal states of Virginia, the Carolinas, and Georgia. Tall fescues and zoysia grass are the two grasses most frequently used in the transitional zone.

Specific Grasses
Cool season. * Creeping Bentgrass
Creeping bentgrass (agrostis palustris) was originally cultivated for use on golf course greens. It's main advantage, especially for greens, is that it tolerates extremely close mowing. In fact, if creeping bentgrass is not mown close and allowed to grow to a normal height found on most homes, it takes on an shaggy appearance. Creeping bentgrass does not tolerate hot, dry weather, nor cold winters. Not designed for normal home use, unless your home is on a golf course green and you plan on mowing your lawn every other day at 1.

The type of diseases that is associated with Tall Fescue and Zenith Zoysia is brown patch. The conditions that are favorable for brown patch are: several days of rain, heavy cloud cover and days temperatures above 80 degrees. When you use excessive nitrogen fertilization in the late spring and summer you are greatly increasing your chances for the disease to happen. The good news is that if you have dry weather, it will put a end to fungus activity and prevent the disease from…

Next let’s look into the factors, the ocean usually has strong sunlight in surface area of the photic zone, though the inside which is aphotic zone do not receive sunlight. In the same way, grasslands also get lots of sunlight as it’s also an open wide area. Therefore both of their temperatures are in the average except in winter. Besides, both of them have different measure of precipitation. In addition, the grasslands are packed with nutrients that makes the ground fertile whereas the ocean offers unlimited supply of water however nutrients are sometimes scarce as the tides and waves influence it.…

    Climatograms: An Overview

    • 371 Words

According to the climatograms that we were given our local climatogram most resembled the mid latitude (temperate) grassland biome of Lawrence, Kansas . I arrived at this conclusion by comparing the two climatogram graphs and noticing a striking resemblance. The precipitation and temperature were almost exactly the same. Although they have similar qualities, the two climatograms also have many distinct differences. In our local biome we can observe that there is more rain in the summer months. We also that the temperature in the Temperate Grassland is usually more warmer especially during the summer months. As you can clearly see, there are many differences between the two biomes, however there are are many differences. In both the biomes, the temperature during the winter months is almost exactly the same. Based on this assumption we can infer that the animals who live in this area have to be the same. After looking at the differences and similarities in the two closley related biomes, we will now look at some differences between the tropical rainforest biome and the desert biome. When we observe the temperature and the precipitation of the two biomes we can make some conclusions as to what type of animals live there. In the tropical rainforest the types of animals that live there have to need lots of water and a warm temperature year round. When you go to the desert the animals that live there are able to survive on little amounts of water and can also survive extreme tempratures. When we look at our own biome in Northeastern Illinois we can see that the types of animals that live here need a steady supply of water and the plants need the warm temprature (sun) in order to survive. They should be able to survive or be dormant during extreme cold tempratures in the winter months. As you can see there are many differences as well similarities between the two biomes and we can also recognize the type of animals that live in…

Though, March (out of the months March, April and May) had the highest wind speed out of the whole year at 9.1mph. This is also when temperatures start to warm up for the seasons and range about 60°F-77°F. So, the farther into the year we get, it heats up fast! However, it is still chilly in the early mornings and at night with a temperature of about 45°F. Because of these cold temperatures, it does still snow in the spring sometimes with an average snowfall of about 1 inch in March. As far as rain goes, spring usually does not have the most rain, contrary to popular believe, summer does. Spring has an average rainfall of; 3.7inches in March, 2.8inches in April and 4inches in…

This scientific paper will answer questions on the effects of salt on grass growth. In the winter, many people place a salt compound on their driveways to melt snow and ice that has accumulated. The following spring, it is noticed that the edges of the driveway does not have any grass growing and grass a little further from the driveway is growing slower than the rest of the lawn. It will be determined if grass growth is negatively impacted in the spring after a winter of salt compound applications.…

The tall grass prairie is an ecosystem native to central North America, with fire as its primary periodic disturbance. In the past, tall grass prairies covered a large portion of the American Midwest, just east of the Great Plains, and portions of the Canadian Prairies. They flourished in areas with rich loess soils and moderate rainfall of around 30 to 35 inches per year. To the east were the fire-maintained eastern savannas. In the northeast, where fire was infrequent and periodic wind throw represented the main source of disturbance, beech-maple forests dominated.…

The Mojave Desert occupies a significant portion of Southern California and parts of Utah, Nevada, and Arizona. Named after the Mohave Native Americans[->0] it occupies roughly 54,000 square miles in a typical Basin and Range topography. The Mojave Desert is bound in part on the western end by the Tehachapi[->1] together with the San Gabriel[->2] and San Bernardino[->3] mountain ranges. The mountain boundaries are quite distinct since they have been created by the two largest faults in California: the San Andreas[->4] and the Garlock[->5]. Its northern and eastern boundaries are less distinct. One way to determine location is by observing the presence of Joshua Trees[->6]. The Mojave Desert receives less than 6 inches of rain a year and is generally between 3,000 and 6,000 feet in elevation. The Mojave Desert also contains the Mojave National Preserve[->7], Joshua Tree National Park[->8] and the lowest-hottest place in North America: Death Valley[->9], where the temperature can approach 120F in late July and early August. The Mojave, like all deserts in general, is known for its summer heat, however, there is wintertime cold. Snow[->10], although uncommon, does fall in parts of the Mojave. Amounts range from just a trace to a foot or more of heavy wet snow, which can lead to freeway traffic closures and being "snowed in". The coldest wintertime temperature ranges below freezing yet above 0F. Many parts of the Mojave typically range from highs of around 95-105F in the summer to lows of around 20-30F in the winter. High winds, often above 50 miles per hour, are also a weather factor and occur frequently along the western end of the Mojave[->11], and are less common toward the east[->12]. There are two important wind events - the June Gloom winds push cooler air into the desert from Southern California and the Santa Ana winds blow hot air from the desert into the Los Angeles…

Bermudagrass is a warm-season grass, which means it grows best when temperatures are around 75°F to 80°F. However, it can withstand temperatures up to 110°F. It grows best in very sunny areas, so it should not be used in areas that are heavily shaded. It has an excellent resistance to drought as well, although since it is a plant it will definitely benefit if it is watered consistently. Bermudagrass grows thick and short for the most part, the blades…

Arizona's population grows in the winter when "snowbirds" migrate to the nice calm and cool weather. In Maricopa county, which covers the entire Phoenix Metropolitan area of Arizona in which I grew up, the weather is very predictable throughout the year. It is a popular state in winter because there are not any storms that pass through and temperatures do not get very cold. The coldest temperature Maricopa had reached was 26 degrees in December. Unlike most other places, in Maricopa, rain is rare, and snow is unheard of. During the summer that population dwindles back to its normal numbers. Snowbirds leave back to their home states to get out of the heat. Summer temperatures can reach up to 122 degrees! A vacation to Arizona during the Summer must be carefully planned if you are not used to these high temperatures. Summer is also "monsoon season". Monsoons bring bursts of heavy rain from the Gulfs of Mexico and California. Arizona gets over half of its rain from monsoon season. But monsoon season also brings "haboobs" which are heavy dust storms which you can hardly see through. Although it can be troublesome or even scary while driving, it is quite an experience to go thru a haboob. The mountains surround you in every direction covered in wildlife and cactus as the amazing sunsets linger over them in swirls of purple, pink, and orange hues. California also has beautiful sunsets, my favorites are over the green rolling hills or the big city buildings. The annual average temperature in Contra Costa County, Californina is much cooler than Arizona at about 60 degrees. Summer temperatures stay anywhere…

i Crouch grass Elytrigia repens (couch grass; syn. Triticum repens L., Agropyron repens (L.) P. Beauv., Elymus repens (L.) Gould) is a very common species of grass native to most of Europe, Asia, and northwest Africa. Other names include twitch, quick grass, quitch grass (also just quitch), dog grass, quackgrass, scutch grass, and witchgrassIt has creeping rhizomes which enable it to grow rapidly across grassland. The stems ('culms') grow to 40–150 cm tall; the leaves are linear, 15–40 cm long and 3–10 mm broad at the base of the plant, with leaves higher on the stems 2–8.5 mm broad. The flower spike is 10–30 cm long, with spikelets 1–2 cm long, 5–7 mm broad and 3 mm thick with three to eight florets. The glumes are 7–12 mm long, usually without an awn or with only a short one.…
