I. Sampling
: a procedure for obtaining a random sample

Goal
Estimate characteristics of a fabric by testing a few pieces(specimens)
Estimate is more ACCURATE if specimens chosen RANDOMLY
** Randomization : each element has the same probability of selection as does every other element
HOW accomplish random sampling?
1. Obtain a sample
SAMPLING FLOW CHART
A. Production lot
One manufacturer’s production made from the same raw material under the same condition ( the population)
Source of a lot sample
B. Lot sample
A portion of material taken to represent a production lot.
Source of a lab sample
(we bought 3 yards from stores)
C. Lab sample
A portion of a lot sample taken for testing
Source of specimens
D. Specimen
A specific portion of a laboratory sample upon which a test is performed
E. observation
A single measurement from a specimen
Ex) strength, weight, etc
2. Devise a sampling plan sampling plan : procedure for obtaining specimens to test

Mass production = producing a large scales

II. SAMPLINIG PLAN – PART 2B

HOW TO IDENTIFY?
1. Selvage type
2. Loom type
3. Tenter frame

1. Selvage type
a. what is the selvage?
Narrow edge of a woven fabric that runs parallel to the warp yarns(has thicker/stronger yarns)
b. How to Identify?
Different Selvage types
Normal (plain) go and forward
Clipped/fringed
It doesn’t tuck around
Tucked
Go and forward but it stops. It doesn’t continue on
Leno
Fused
Binning elements

2. Loom type
a. what is a loom?
Weaving machine
b. 2 types of Looms shuttle (boat like device carries filling) shuttle-less (rapier, air et, projectile)
c. How to Identify?
Shuttle has plain selvage

3. Tenter Frame type what is a tenter frame?
A machine that sets a fabric’s width and grain after finishing
b. two types of tenter frames
1. Pin
2. Clip
** how to identify?
Pin holes vs. Clip marks

III. Fabric quality grain and yarn distortion

On grain warp (end) run
