Two Fisherman Morley Callaghan Analysis
I feel as if the actions of Michael, from the story “Two Fisherman”by Morley Callaghan, are justified. Michael may not think of Smitty as a friend, but more of an acquaintance, also he does not want to compromise his dream of becoming a big news reporter, finally he feels pressured by the people and thus leading him to betray his friend. We have seen multiple times that Michael feels no positive or negative affection towards the hangman. Morley Callaghan deliberately shows us the contrast of the hangman and Michael in the story and how each of them approaches their relationship. During their fishing trip, Michael does not say anything about how he feels however Smitty constantly mentions it. A good example of this is when Smitty says, as they …show more content…
We the readers are left to infer whether they are friends or it is just Smitty thinking that they are friends. The very first thing mentioned in the story, even before Michael’s name, is his job. Michael dreams of becoming a first class city news reporter. We see this, also, in the first sentence, it said, “Michael Foster, a tall, long-legged, eager, young eager fellow, who wanted to go to the city some day and work on an important newspaper.” (Callaghan, 300). If Michael had shown the townspeople that he is friends with the hangman then no one would want to collaborate with him. If no one would want to collaborate with him it would be much harder for him to achieve his dream. Michael should be allowed to put his needs before someone else’s if he wants too and for that, we cannot judge him. When Michael tried to back away slowly he ran into James Mortimer and was stopped in his tracks. The man tells Michael to throw the fish at the hangman, but Michael would not do it. Michael said, “Nothing. I got nothing against him.” (Callaghan, 306). This shows us that even though he is betraying him in a way, he still won’t do harm to the

Michael was born into a bad situation to begin with; his mother was a crack addict. The neighborhood was known as a “broken windows” neighborhood, crime rate high and a lack of police presence. No one ever gave Michael a chance or believed in him until he met the Tuohy family, who changed his life. The plan that I have thought of for Michael is for him to continue living with the Tuohy family, but get in touch with his siblings. He needs to know his biological family. Sorting and organizing his life events in different factors, the majority of them are psychological factors, which should result with him seeing a counselor to relieve some of his life’s…

Also, I will be answering question number 8. In the beginning of the story, Michael was very scared and nervous at all times. He acted this way because if the government found out about his father, he would be sent back to Cuba and be separated with his brother. At the end of the story, however, Michael feels a lot more happy and relieved to do what he wants. The truth about his father’s death comes out, but his coach takes him into his household temporarily. Now, he isn’t keeping all of his feelings bottled up and…

They smelled just like what they were- a couple of drunks whose stomachs had been injected with whatever it is the body makes when it feels cold and full of booze and knows something bad has happened and doesn't want tomorrow to come.” -p. 26 Bullies express themselves by how they make others around them feel. Just as a drunk creates gloom and stupidity or a bully might beat someone up. A boss can ruin your day at work by making you do lowly tasks. Just as a fly fisherman can beat you to the best spot and ruin your time. Paul is a drunk bullying fly fisherman…

His shadow would reveal itself, which Mike did not want to bare to the rest of the community because he wanted to fit in. He would repress his feelings by re-thinking his actions when it came to hurting another person. When he stood there, watched, felt irritated next to a man, and he told him how he felt towards the man trying to burn the body. He turned to a man who stood beside him in the near-darkness, “ That don’t do no good, he said” (Steinbeck 133). Mike felt this strange feeling inside him, like dullness.…

Throughout Michael’s life, detailed in Can You Call a 9-Year-Old a Psychopath?, Michael can go day to day ranging between fits of absolute primitive, horrific rage, only to be immediately followed up by a calm, albeit cold, adult-like demeanor. This shift between extremes is bizarre for anyone, let alone a 9 year old boy with two younger siblings not showing the same issues with temper and emotions. Making these decisions voluntarily, and without regret or ever choosing to do the virtuous thing for sake of it being the right thing to do, means Michael is a vicious person, choosing to live a vicious life. I will argue that Michael cannot avoid vice because in his mind, vice is seen as good from birth and he will always commit vicious acts because of this.…

In our daily life, we always try to avoid conflict with others in order to make a good relationship to benefit each other. However, in a story, it needs to do opposite thing since conflict is the engine to start and drive the story progress. In “The Boat” by Alistair Macleod, the conflict between the mother and father effectively reflects the clear theme that people’s feeling is complicated exposing the impact of change that resulted from the conflict between tradition and modernization in Eastern Canada.”…
