Twenty First Century Learner
Students today are often referred to as twenty first century learners because of access they have to technology. They collaborate amazingly well. They love team work and figuring out things with their friends. The twenty first century learners are information driven. They have never known a world without Google. The twenty first century learners are self-directed learners, they are able to learn whatever with free online sources. Todays learners download their own songs and apps from Itunes and create their own videos and upload it to share with others. The evident changes in twenty first century students are they are collaborative, information driven and self –directed. Web 2.0 resources enable collaboration to blossom for the twenty first learners. There are various web 2.0 tools that are used for collaboration. Write boards. Google docs and wikis are just a few. Write boards are shareable, web based text documents that let you save every edit, roll back to any version, and easily compare changes. Write boards can use to write solo or collaborate with others. Google docs is an online word processor spread sheet and presentation editor that enables anyone to create, store and share instantly and securely and collaborate online in real time. New document can be created from scratch or upload existing documents, spread sheets and presentation Google docs can be used to collaborate online with fellow students, even when they are not in the same place and they get feedback easily. Wikis allow asynchronous communication and group collaboration across the internet. Sometimes described as a composition system, a discussion medium, a repository, a mail system, and a tool for collaboration. Wikis provide user with both author and editor privileges; the overall organization of contributions can be edited as well as the content itself.     In this global economy in which organizations are driven by technology, processes and the need to share information, collaboration is important. Rosen (2007) defines collaboration as "working together to create value while sharing virtual or physical space" (p. 9). Collaboration has become a standard in today’s organizations. Teams are working together virtually or face-to-face on projects or on problem solving. Sharing experiences between corporate team’s speeds up the problem solving process, which is a direct benefit for the company as client issues can be solved faster. An important aspect of collaboration is the tools used to facilitate the process. David Bicknell writes in the Computer Weekly magazine “Collaborative tools can give that business advantage, unlock organization-wide and global intellect, and use that to foster the joined up thinking that will drive innovation" (Bicknell, 2009). The two main types of collaboration that can happen in the workplace are synchronous and asynchronous collaboration. When two or more people work together on a project at same time using tools like instant messaging, web conferencing and white boarding, it is considered synchronous collaboration. When they do so at different times using forums and message boards that is considered asynchronous collaboration (“Collaboration,” 2009). Effective collaboration can result in many benefits for the individuals or organizations involved. But for that to happen, the collaborating team has to have a common objective or goal and be made up of people with the right skill sets. They also need the resources, and an adequate environment or forum to collaborate in. Collaborating partners must be willing to engage in constructive confrontation, set up and abide by some ground rules and have a facilitator.
