Turning Points What can cause a sudden change in someone’s life? It could be an act of another, or the realization of an aspect about yourself. It can also be the death or birth of another, or even just a simple act of kindness. A significant change in someone's life can include the impact from others, a change in the community, or a tragic incident. First of all, in the stories, “from An American Childhood” and “Thank You M’am” a significant change happened in one of the main characters lives that made a lasting effect. In the story, “from An American Childhood” the main character, Annie Dillard wrote a reflective essay about when she first realized that even though her parents might not be interested in the same activities that she enjoys, they always supported her. This had a lasting effect on her because I think that this understanding helped her to become a better person. In the story, “Thank You M’am” one of the main characters experienced a significant change in his life when he tried to steal Mrs. Jones purse but failed. Instead of turning Roger into the police, she took him to her house, fed him, and helped him to realize his mistake.
