Turkey: A Short Story
At one time people thought that becoming a turkey for Thanksgiving was impossible but not for me. Me and my brother were playing and our mom called us for dinner that’s when it started. Kids time for dinner. Coming mom we yelled. What’s for dinner? I asked her. Turkey again. Yes its turkey why? You know that I hate having turkey every night. Well you like or not and that’s all we can afford right now so deal with it. No I will not I’d rather have my self than a turkey for dinner. Well if you don’t eat then go to bed. Fine I will. I should not have wished to have myself rather than turkey that night it was a bad mistake. Kids wake up its time for school. Ouch my head hurts. I said. I throw off my blanket and I still feel warm so I

32 “Well its actually happening ma’, I’m goin’ back to school.”Rufus said. “I want you to know, I truly am proud of you Rufus.” His mother replied. Curtis and Janet went to a different school then Rufus but he still walked them to school then walked himself to school. On his way to school a car followed him very slowly but Rufus kept walking. When he got to school it looked the same on the outside that it always had. Rufus pushed open the doors at Searingtown School and yelled “I’m back!” All of his friends ran over to hug him. He went down to the office to get a tour he thought he didn’t need because he remembered every single solitary thing about this place. While the tour was going on everything going on was a blur. He looked left, right and left again, admiring the changes the school had made. “Wow” he sighed. “Is there a problem Rufus?” the tour guide asked. Rufus answered, “When I was here the wall paint was all chipped, there were broken windows and holes in the walls.” “Oh ok, well that concludes our tour and this door on your right is your first period class.” The tour guide replied. Rufus walked in and sat at an available seat at the back of the class room. He opened his notebook and took notes even though he didn’t understand anything that was going on. By the time 5th period came around it was time for lunch he was starving. All of his friends called him over and asked him to sit with him. Momma didn’t make him a big lunch because they didn’t have that much food in the house and then needed to split it 3 different ways. Allison who used to have a big crush on Rufus sat right next to him. Mitchell and Charlie sat across from him and Christina, Alisha and Sammy sat around them. When the bell rang he went to his locker and when he got to class he looked out the window and saw the same car that followed him to school. The only person he thought of was Simon. But he didn’t have a car? Rufus ran to the office to explain the…

Mustafa Kemal’s impact on the modern Turkish state is irrefutable, so much so that he was given the name Atatürk by the national assembly, meaning “father of the Turks”, banning anyone else from using this name. Turkey, one of the few culturally Islamic nations without a Sharia legal system , is often referred to as one of the most modernized states with a Muslim majority . Atatürk is often attributed with the modernization of Turkey, through, amongst other things, social, political and economic reform. Kemalism, the founding ideology of the republic of Turkey, was a series of extensive programs of reform aimed at modernizing Turkey through six pillars, referred to as the six arrows of Kemalism, namely nationalism, republicanism, secularism,…

The Huffington Post article, “The Cost of Turkey’s Self-Interest” written on December 28, 2015 by Khairuldeen Al Makhzoomi is about the way that Turkey is going about accepting Syrian refugees. Al Makhzoomi blames the mass amount of refugees for Turkey’s lack of food and housing and makes the claim that a lack of border encourages jihadists to join ISIS. He goes on to say that Turkey is actually supporting the Islamic State by providing them with money, training, and weapons. Al Makhzoomi believes that Turkey’s self-interest is accountable for its willingness to help the Islamic State. Turkey prioritizes removing President al-Assad from Syria and containing Kurdish militias over the international humanitarian effort to stop ISIS.…

From 1520 to 1566 in eastern Anatolia when he died Suleiman I the Magnificent had changed the Empire immensely. The sons of Suleiman, who ruled the Ottoman Empire who once were able to call each other brothers, now call each other traitors because each son was consumed by greed and an obsession for power now that their father is out of throne and only one may rise up to the hierarchy. They each had plans to skyrocket the empire in their own very different ways. And so no matter who became the next Sultan, despite making enemies every time the Ottomans had expanded, the Ottomans kept their empire well unified because they had a very robust army, and the Golden Age aided in legitimacy and loyalty towards Suleiman I.…

Racism is also a problem between the people of Turkey and the Armenians. This is because of the long negative history between Turkey, its Armenian citizens, and Armenia. In 1915, the Turkish government ordered a genocide of its Armenian citizens, which killed 1.5 million of the 2 million Armenians that lived in Turkey at the time (“Armenian genocide”). Moreover, the genocide ended in 1922 and left the country with only 388,000 Armenian people left in Turkey. The Turkish government claims that the killings were necessary and that the Armenians were their enemy. The government does not like to acknowledge that the genocide happened. Therefore it is illegal to talk about the genocide in Turkey.…

I met her at the bus station, and showed her a bright pink winter coat. “Emporium Capwell, nineteen dollars! For you!” I said proudly. Recently, June had been going out in only a light sweater, and I didn’t want her to catch a cold. I held it up to her body, but June pushed it away and stuffed it into the bag. “Ma, I wish you wouldn’t do that in public. Besides, the color’s too bright,” she complained. “Tsk, health is most important,” I said. She got annoyed at this, and simply said, ” Whatever. Let’s just get lunch over with.” How can you rush lunch? Lunch is a meal for social interaction and enjoying the food, not just something to be checked off. We walked and talked, not really listening to each other. Soon we arrived at the markets, and there was on fish. “Nikan!” Look! “50 percent off all seafood, only today!” I dragged her over, and started my regular buying ritual, testing the fish and shouting to the vendors. My daughter stepped away from me and took out her cell phone. “Ma, I wish you wouldn’t do that. It’s embarrassing. Let’s just get to the restaurant.” Sometimes I wish I had disciplined her more. I was always too relaxed when she was younger, I had never taught her respect, when to keep her mouth shut. Now it is too late, I cannot teach her anymore. All I can do is ignore her and carry…

The Ottoman Empire is the Turkish and Islamic state that ruled from 1299-1922. It is one of the most important and powerful Muslim Empires. The founder of the Ottoman Empire is Osman I. At first it was only a tribe and consisted of little followers but in a very short time it grew into being an Empire. Great architectural, military, and administrative accomplishments have taken place in the Ottoman Empire. The reason that this was such an powerful and long lasting Empire was because of the Sultan was not the only one ruling and not the only one making decisions. The Empire was not run by the personal choices and wants of the Sultan. The Ottoman Sultans were greatly affected by the institutions that surrounded them. Some of them being the wazirs, qadis, Shaykh al-Islam, janissaries and the women of the harem. The Sultan was of course at the top of the hierarchy but he made decisions n accordance with the approval of…

There were about five children playing “house.” In the family there was a child pretending to be the mommy, the daddy, the older brother, the younger sister, and the puppy. The mommy was making dinner while the daddy was watching television and supervising the children while they did their homework. The young girl who was acting as the puppy gave out a few occasional “ruffs” to make her presence known. The young girl, who assumed her role as the mother, yelled out “dinners ready.” The two young kids pretending to be the children stopped doing homework and sat down at the dinner table. The young girl playing the mom sternly said to her children “be careful, the food is very hot. It just came out of the oven.” They continued this story for the…
