The USMC came into existence on November 10, 1775 when the Continental Congress approved the appropriation of two infantry battalions designed to perform both land and maritime defense. Marines would perform tasks including “ship-to-ship fighting, provide shipboard security and discipline enforcement, and assist in landing forces” (Moore, n.d., para. 5). Tun Tavern, in Philadelphia, served as a recruiting station and Captain Samuel Nicholas, who was the first commissioned Commander of the Marine Corps, used the tavern to recruit approximately five companies consisting of 300 men per unit.
