Tulak movie review
Tulak (2009)
Stars: Rafael Rosell | John Regala | Melissa Mendez | Fanny Serrano | Julio Diaz | Maria Isabel Lopez
Genre: Drama
Director: Neal Tan
Review:
Orphaned at a young age, Tikboy (Rafael Rosell) was under her aunt Lukray’s (Isabel Lopez) wings together with her live-in-partner Abdon (Julio Diaz). Aunt Lukray is an aging prostitute while Abdon is a corrupt and fraudulent policeman who also happens to be a drug pusher, with Tikboy as his delivery boy or batang “Tulak”. Together they are situated at a narrow alley called “Kalye Walang Buhay” where most residents are immoral, criminal and drug addicts. Tikboy, despite his young age of nine (9) was maltreated by Abdon. Synonymously his Aunt Lokray was then maltreated too by Abdon. One time, when Tikboy tries to save her Aunt from the hands of Abdon, he got badly wounded, forcing him to leave for the outside world. Several years later, Tikboy has become a grown man, but as an ex-convict. Apparently, all he wanted to do is to save his Aunt from Abdon. The following events showed how Tikboy saves his Aunt and how they continued their lives with help from other people at their side. I might say the film “Tulak” is good for a independent film. Despite being an independent one, the cast of the film was filled with talented stars. Every star on the film made their roles bloom. Their acting was magnificent in their own way. The places that were used in the movie were well chosen. It was very fit for the story. The effects were also good. Overall, the film just wants to tell us that we must do all our parts in fighting drugs. The film is great for everybody to watch, especially for the youth.

The next generation of Trask brothers, the dark haired Cal and fair-haired Aaron, also carry out the dynamics of the Cain and Abel tale. Cal's jealousy towards Aron is due to the favoritism that Aron receives from their father Adam; this is especially seen through an episode that resulted in Aarons death. For some reason, Adam favors Aron over Cal and when Cal offers his father a birthday present of $15,000 to help him recover his financial losses, Adam scorns him for making the money during a war-time economy. In a rage, Cal takes his brother to visit the notorious prostitute that birthed the two boys. Emotionally traumatized, Aaron runs away to the army during World War I, and dies soon after. The setting was good and I have to admit the actors were outstanding! Every character was extremely well played with a good batch of confidence. Made me feel like they really had been through all of it. Gregory Burke has made an informative, entertaining and provoking play not to forget. Al parts in equal measure. Fantastic. Above all, the scene I enjoyed the most, was the one where Cammy practically gets changed. The viewer gets taken in the hand and brought through a whole lot of previous wars. That was truthfully amazing scenery work.…

We can see the impact of drug abuse and its impact on the African American community in the movie through the main character’s (Cuba Gooding Jr.) interaction with his neighbor. In one scene Cuba Gooding Jr. grabs a child in the street to avoid it being hit by a car, and when he takes it back to the mother we can see that she is high and intoxicated off drugs. The mother’s blatant negligence of her child is further shown through her attempt to buy drugs off Cuba Gooding Jr.’s character.…

There was one aspect of the movie I quickly agreed with at the ending. “We cant keep doing what were doing.” What needs to be focus on is how we can prevent crime, specifically drug crime. This means an overall of the Criminal Justice system. Julie Stewart advocates for 'Families Against Mandatory Minimums' and I agree with the moment shes trying to pass. Were filling our jail and prisons with low level offenders. As a result were perpetuating the cycle as kids see their parents go off to jail, and these youths thinking they too at some point in their future wind up behind bars. A man at the begining of the film said his role models were thugs and gang bangers, that it was the only way to make decent money. Another important thing that stood out to me is when an inmate said, once we get out we still have to check off the prison felony box on resumes. It's like these offenders cant escape even after they have done their time, as as I result I too feel the entirely of the criminal justice system needs to be reworked if we want to get…

Many claim it either to be too depressing, that it is simply an 'MTV project', or that it "celebrates the dubious glamour of the junkie lifestyle" (Arnold, Seatlepi). Yet I would disagree with all these claims as to why this movie is bad. First off, yes, this movie is not happy, but should all movies leave us with nothing but 'Oh, that was a fun movie!'? No, it's nice to see an intellectually good movie, which makes the audience really FEEL something. It is a movie which doesn't sit easily, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Secondly, there are claims that it is a MTV project. The director himself understands this feeling. He says that the MTV style is, "a style without substance" (Aronofsky, DVD extra). He argues that by saying, every shot and his way of filming is based on the truth and the story, he claims that he has substance behind his style. Finally, he doesn't just mean for this to be a movie about drugs. It is about addiction, whether that be a drug, coffee, sex, or hope. It may be unsettling how the kids turn to drugs, but not everything we see or deal with in life is a pretty…

No matter what situation they get into, the boy always tried his best to be a “good guy.” For example, when the man and the boy come back to their campsite everything is gone. A thief stole their whole cart causing them to have nothing. They catch the thief and the man threatens him by pointing a flare pistol at him. “Papa please don’t kill the man. The boy was crying” (256). Although the thief had left the two stranded with no food or essentials, the boy begs his father not to hurt the man. He is genuinely caring and forgiving towards the thief, despite leaving them with nothing to survive. Unfortunately, his father consequently forces the thief to strip completely naked and return the cart. The boy quickly becomes distraught. As they leave this poor…

Set in the majestic rice terraces, Haw-Ang (English title: Before Harvest) is an indie film advocating children's right to quality education, empowerment of women, and welfare of our indigenous countrymen. It tells the story of Sister Adel, a light-hearted young nun who goes to a farming village in Ifugao to teach catechism and eventually build a schoolhouse. As she breaks the traditions of the tribe, she makes a big difference in the little lives of its people, especially that of Dacmay, a seven-year-old rowdy girl in search of her lost mother's love. At the same time, Sister Adel finally discovers her real mission in life. This is a poignant story of friendship and love that transcends age, culture, and belief. A tale that is at times comic and inevitably tragic, this is a film about being a woman, and more importantly, being human. It all begins at the time of preparing rice paddies for planting, in that season of hopes and dreams called "haw-ang."…
