Seizing the opportunity to provide a much needed service, Mary established Magnolia Therapeutic Solutions (henceforth referred to as Magnolia) and ran the organization as the Executive Director. Due to the unique position of the organization and a number of funding sources willing to provide start-up grants to Magnolia, the organization grew quite quickly. In 1998, the organization began with six employees, and each employee wore many different hats to ensure the sustainability and growth of the organization. However, by 2000, the organization’s staff size had grown to 34. Thanks to the continued growth of demand for services and the tangential supply of grant money, the organization was performing quite well. Staff members were now no longer required to perform more than their main task, the annual budget was now over $1.3 million, and the organization had already received many prestigious awards and accolades for the services that they have performed for NYC.…

The type of surface that a wheelchair is most often used on will dictate which wheelchair casters are best suited for the chair. Smaller casters function well on indoor and soft surfaces, while they also make turning and rotating easier. The larger casters are generally used for harder, uneven surfaces. Most casters are located on the front of a wheelchair, but they may also be located on the rear of chairs if the wheelchair has centrally positioned drive wheels.…

In contrast, the women in “Everyday Use” by Walker exemplify the total opposite of what Southern women should be. Walker allows the mother in “Everyday Use” to have self-confident strength, in which she takes on the tasks usually reserved for a man. In the beginning the mother describes herself as “a large big-boned woman with rough, man-working hands.” She goes further to explain how she “can kill and clean a hog as mercilessly as a man.” Walker makes the mother the narrator of the story which becomes significant since she is a great example of the resistance shown to move into a more modernized world. Throughout her narration, it becomes obvious the mother is stuck in tradition, so much so her confinement becomes clear due to her lack of…

This award from the KPMG Future Leaders Program will help me achieve my goals not only by supplying me with financial assistance to pay for college but also by allowing me to interact with strong, success women who have experience and insight into a male-driven field. It is seldom that a young woman like myself has the opportunity to further their knowledge of business and communications, and gets to learn that information from strong female leaders. My goals and aspirations stretch far beyond my current skills, and I hope that an award from the KPMG Future Leaders Program will allow me to grow the skills I need to continue on to be a leader to those around me. Going into my freshman year of college with a mentor counseling and teaching me the skill sets required to succeed in my field and to prosper at NYU next year, would be an extraordinary privilege and honor. Woman have always been major contributors to society, despite being shoved down and oppressed on too many occasions and in too many ways. It has always amazed me that despite being oppressed, women have always remained true to their strength and have paved the way for other intellectual, career driven women to prosper in the modern…

I interviewed Becky Hendrix, Executive Director for Professional Care Services. I recently had the honor of interviewing someone in our community who has had more than twenty years of leadership experience in our community. The interview ended up taking much longer than I expected because I was so influenced by what she had to say, I did not want to miss anything. Mrs. Becky Hendrix started her career as a CPA back in the 80 's for the World Color Press. Her leadership abilities were quickly realized, and she was promoted to head CPA. From there she moved on to the Professional Care Service where she remained for fifteen years serving as a CPA, and finally working her way up to the Executive Director. Becky was in charge of over 187 employees. My conversation with Becky took a direction that I did not expect. She attributes her success to the leadership traits that she has learned over the years, and quoted many of the very ideas and theories almost verbatim from our class lecture. That was an incredible experience to witness firsthand how these traits become behaviors and practices.…
