Troy Movie Review
Troy directed by Wolfgang Petersen 2004 The movie Troy is about the conflict between the Greek city-states, led by Agamemnon, and Troy, ruled by Priam. These two have this conflict because Paris, Prince of Troy, fell in love with Helen, wife of Menelaus who is Agamemnon’s brother and king of Sparta, and took her back to Troy against the wishes of his brother, Hector, who, with his father, had been trying for years to make peace with Sparta and had finally gotten that peace. Agamemnon had recently united all of the Greek city-states and wanted to take over Troy too, so this conflict over Helen was his perfect opportunity. He uses the main character, Achilles, to fight his battles, even though Achilles hates fighting for him and only fights for himself. A fleet of one thousand Greek ships sails to Troy and a battle occurs. After Achilles kills Hector out of revenge for Hector killing his cousin Patroclus and drags Hector’s body behind his chariot to the Greek encampment, King Priam comes to the Greek camp by their boats and begs for Hector’s body back, Achilles agrees to give the body back and Achilles promises twelve days of peace. During these twelve days, the Greeks build a horse, vanish inside of it and make it seem that they were cursed with a plague. The Trojans come to the camp after the twelve days and find all the Greeks gone but there was a huge horse, which they saw as a gift. They take it back into the city walls and celebrate, but at night, the Greeks come out of the horse and burn the city down. The movie ends with Achilles being killed by Paris by an arrow shot through the heel when he was trying to rescue Paris’ and Hector’s cousin Briseis, whom he fell in love with, and the city of Troy in ruins. The Advanced Placement World History theme of State-Building, Expansion and Conflict is expressed throughout this movie. In the movie, the Greek city-states were creating an empire under the rule of Agamemnon. However, this is inaccurate because there

In the first book of the “Iliad”, Achilles pride was hurt when Agamemnon takes Achilles prize, Briseis, from him after Agamemnon’s prize, Chryseis, was demanded back from the Greek god Apollo. This began the rage inside Achilles and with this he refused to continue fighting with the Achaean army and took his men back home. Achilles also pleaded his story to his mother, Thetis, and asked her to talk with Zeus to punish the Achaean’s. Even though Apollo lifted the plaque he casted over the camp after Chryseis was returned, Achilles request from Zeus was now in place and with Zeus now on the Trojans side, the worst was yet to come. Even though the Trojan War has been going on for nearly ten years, Achilles decision to refuse to fight alongside Agamemnon cripples the Achaean army and ends the ten year battle within a matter of a few days after his return. On the other hand the conflict that arose between Agamemnon and Achilles was started by the Greek God Apollo whom casted the plaque in the first place which in turn tipped off the conflict between these two men. The following phrase provides the bases of the Achilles antagonist: “Sing, O goddess, the anger of Achilles son of…

In The Trojan War: A New History, author Barry Strauss argues for the historical authenticity of the event that was immortalized in epic poetry and song from the Archaic and Classical periods of Greece, and later Rome. Strauss keeps these epic works in mind as he digs deeper in the site of what is believed to be the ruins of once was Troy, and provides a fresh outlook on the most memorable conflict of the late Bronze Age. I will analyze and critique the work of Barry Strauss on the subject of the Trojan War as presented in his book, The Trojan War: A New History. The background of the author will be explored before beginning the journey into commenting on his abilities as a writer in discussing the format of his prose, and the historical method Strauss used in his piece. This will culminate with a brief analysis on how his evidence was presented, before concluding remarks summarizing the critical view of the book.…

As the bloodshed seemed to be at a stale mate between the two domineering powerhouses, the Greek kings Odysseus and Ithaca had thought of an idea that could possibly win the battle. They said “build a big wooden horse on wheels”. They explained that it would be used to hide Greek soldiers and infiltrate the city of Troy without being noticed. And just that happened. The Greeks offered them the horse as a sign of surrender and also a gift to the goddess Athena. They accepted the gift and, as planned, brought it in their city. Because of the horse’s massive size, the Trojans had to take down a whole city wall to bring it in leaving them open to attack. After the whole town celebrated the victory over Greece, they went to sleep and that is when they attacked. The soldiers filled out the horse and began their raid. They killed the guards and signaled in the rest of the Greeks to come in through the gapping whole where the wall was torn down. They had soon won the battle that roared in Troy. They murdered all the men and the women and children were sent to Greece to be slaves. Greece won the battle by lying to the Trojans, proving a positive result from it. The outcome was their victory against their rival and it not only did well to Odysseus and Ithaca but also the entire Greek…

The epic story told in Trojan War is considered by many to be a starting foundation of Greek mythology and to other modern stories we still tell today. It is a story of envy, disloyalty, cleverness, and persistence that few stories can challenge. Greek myths such as The War on Troy tell of epic tales of gods and goddesses working together and even feuding among each other in order to create a more desirable world for themselves. They are the stories of people dealing with and overcoming personal and cultural issues as represented by the gods in a society where history and storytelling go hand in hand. These so called myths…

To play the terrifying and intimidating Achilles, Peterson was able get Hollywood heartthrob Brad Pitt. With casting Pitt, Peterson was able to really emphasis what was found in Achilles during the duration of the epic. Which is why Peterson giving Pitt an additional scene in the movie where it seems as if Achilles has emotions. In the film, Achilles is seen to be grieving the death of a valiant warrior, Hector. Despite that, in The Iliad, Achilles who slaughters Hector, is not seen demonstrating any kind of sensitivity towards the Trojan warrior's demise. The expansion of emotions to Achilles' character again gives the entire drama aspect to the theme of the film. It makes Achilles appear like one of us, rather than the fierce warrior he is really portrayed as in the epic. This gives the modern audience a kind of sensitivity towards Achilles, who has lost his cousin Patrocles and now he has slaughtered the prince of Troy, who like him, cherished his family. Helen was in the end taken by Menelaus, and Menelaus was not executed by Hector. By doing this Petersen gave the film a kind of good guy gets the girl sort feeling, as Paris is appeared to be honest and safe, despite the fact that he brought about the war. In the film he might be seen as a legend sort character, although in the epic, he is seen as an antagonist type of…

Homer’s Iliad is a powerful, beautiful, and awe-inspiring work of ancient Greece. An epic poem and a classic of world literature, the Iliad recounts portions of the war between Greece and the city-state of Troy. Most entrancing are his vivid & wonderful descriptions of the Great City of Troy and illustrious recounts of the events that took place on this ancient site. It is not a surprise that the 19th century German archaeologist or arguably treasure hunter, Heinrich Schliemann was spellbound to find Homer’s classical city of Troy and it is often said that we know so much about Troy today because of one man’s obsession, indeed of his childhood dream which he made come true.…

In Homer’s book The Iliad, Homer tells the story of the Trojan War with Achilles, the best Greek warrior. However, Achilles does not like Agamemnon, the king of Mycenae, because he took Briseis (Briseis was a woman that Achilles had received as a war prize). This is the reason why Achilles was raged at Agamemnon. In a rage, Achilles wants to kill all of the Trojans, especially Hector, the best Trojan warrior. Patroclus, Achilles’ best friend goes out to the battle field as Achilles (wearing his armor), trying to kill Hector but instead Hector kills Patroclus thinking he has killed Achilles. When Achilles finds out about this, he is very mad and goes out to kill Hector himself. When he kills Hector, he is very arrogant about it. Only after this happens does Achilles get Briseis back from Agamemnon.…

The characterization of important figures in the film is different from the poem. Achilles for example, Homer portrays him as a formidable soldier in the Iliad, as if he was immortal but his disturbed, human being characteristics are showed in later chapters in the poem. On the other hand, Achilles is characterized as a hero in Troy. He is depicted as a respectable and laudable character in the film. One of the examples for such differences is showed in both the poem and the film, in the way Achilles treats Hector's body after he has killed him. In the Iliad, Achilles shows no emotion over Hector's death. After he has kills Hector, he ties Hector's body behind the chariot and drag him around the tomb of Patroclus for twelve days (24. 15-17). He only agrees to give the body to back King Priam after his mother persuades him with the condition of King Priam offers him a ransom (24.139-140). In Troy, however, the maltreatment of Hector's body is not shown except for the scene when Achilles drags the body back to his camp. Also, Achilles sympathizes with King Priam and willing to give the body back to King Priam unconditionally, and he even cries over Hector's body at one point. Besides, Achilles' role as a leader is highlighted in Troy. Under his leadership, him and his Myrmidons successfully seize the shore of Trojan in an afternoon. In the Iliad on the other hand, his leadership abilities is not mentioned. In Troy, Achilles is falling in love with Breseis and he is protecting her from harm and insult. In the end of the film, Achilles causes his own death while looking for her in the falling kingdom of Troy. In the Iliad, Archilles' role as a lover is only briefly mentioned by referring Briseis as his lover, (9.341-343) his fight with Agamemnon is mainly due to protecting his own honor when Agamemnon takes Briseis away from him. (1.355-356)…
