Trojan War and Helen
Menelaus

Troy:
In the movie Menelaus is killed by Hector when Menelaus is about to kill his brother, Paris. Therefore Helen is free to be with Paris. Iliad:
In the Iliad, Menelaus doesn’t die. In the end Menelaus ends up taking Helen back as his wife.

Achilles Troy:
In the movie Achilles was killed in the battle at troy. This totally changes the ending and makes the Greeks seem that much more reliant on Achilles. Iliad:
In the Iliad, Achilles dies before the Trojan horse ever enters the city. This proves that Greece can still hold their own. Achilles son was actually the one who fought in the battle at troy.

Paris Troy:
In the movie Paris lives through the battle and it is portrayed that he gets away and goes off with Helen and Hector’s widow and child. Iliad:
In the Iliad Paris is actually killed in the battle within the city of Troy by an arrow. Because of this it is possible for Menelaus to claim Helen back at the end.

Major differences: Troy: - War lasted 17 days
- Achilles died in battle at troy
- Menelaus was killed by Hector
- Paris lived and escaped with Helen Iliad: - War lasted 10 years
- Achilles died before Trojan Horse
- Menelaus lived and got Helen
- Paris dies by arrow at troy. Minor Differences: Troy: - Fought mostly with swords
- Helen had no children
- City protected by 50ft wall
- The plain in front of Troy was empty Iliad: - Fought mostly with spears
- Helen had a daughter by Menelaus
- City protected by deep trench
- The Scamander River ran through the plain in front of Troy

Length of the war: Troy:
In Troy the length of the war was only 17 days long. This greatly decreases the significance of the overall event and makes it seem not as important. The Iliad:
In the Iliad the war lasts an entire 10 years. This creates a huge impact and depicts the on going events and battles with great significance.

Helen: Troy:
In the movie Troy, Helen has not yet had any children before meeting Paris.
This made it much easier and a smoother transition for to spontaneously leave Sparta. The act of Aphrodite gifting Helen to Paris is not shown in the film, their love is bound without the Goddess’ actions. The Iliad:
In The Iliad Helen had a daughter. The father of her daughter was Menelaus.
However Aphrodite intervened to gift Paris of Troy, Helen of Sparta.

As the bloodshed seemed to be at a stale mate between the two domineering powerhouses, the Greek kings Odysseus and Ithaca had thought of an idea that could possibly win the battle. They said “build a big wooden horse on wheels”. They explained that it would be used to hide Greek soldiers and infiltrate the city of Troy without being noticed. And just that happened. The Greeks offered them the horse as a sign of surrender and also a gift to the goddess Athena. They accepted the gift and, as planned, brought it in their city. Because of the horse’s massive size, the Trojans had to take down a whole city wall to bring it in leaving them open to attack. After the whole town celebrated the victory over Greece, they went to sleep and that is when they attacked. The soldiers filled out the horse and began their raid. They killed the guards and signaled in the rest of the Greeks to come in through the gapping whole where the wall was torn down. They had soon won the battle that roared in Troy. They murdered all the men and the women and children were sent to Greece to be slaves. Greece won the battle by lying to the Trojans, proving a positive result from it. The outcome was their victory against their rival and it not only did well to Odysseus and Ithaca but also the entire Greek…

With him, she cheated on her husband, Menelaus. This is where things got ugly. War broke out between the Trojans and the Greeks, and in the end- Menelaus ended up back with his wife. In the Odyssey, it picks up with the couple having a celebration because they had just married off their two children. Here, they recount stories from the Trojan war which makes some of the men kind of emotional. Helen puts a drug in their wine to make the pain of the memories of the lost men go away (Odyssey 4.243-246). Helen tells stories bragging on the bold and clever moves Odysseus made during the war, such as dressing up like a beggar, secretly getting information from the Trojans, and killing men (Odyssey 4.263-296). It almost seemed like Helen was secretly rooting for Odysseus the whole time. She also recalls bathing and aiding him, which spited Menelaus. It is evident in the story choice that he recalls from the Trojan war. He tells the story of the gigantic wooden horse sent by the Greeks to the Trojans as a “gift”. This wooden horse was actually full of Greek soldiers, and Helen tried to seduce these men in the horse by pretending and speaking in the voice of their wives (Odyssey 4.298-324). Helen is not a decent woman. Not only did she dishonor and disrespect her marriage, but made herself into a fool. The stories that Menelaus tells is evidence of this, she is not an honest person- even with…

As the most beautiful girl in the world at the time, she was loved by multiple men. She was almost godly, both in her physicality and mentality, the essence of a powerful woman. Helen’s status was higher than the men, almost higher than Menelaus himself. An example of this is when she found the men all crying so she drugs them and cheers them up with a story. When her husband didn't recognize Telemachus, she noticed immediately.…

    Paris in Not a Hero

    • 376 Words

In Eth Clifford's Greek myth "Paris and the Golden Apple", the character of Paris does not demonstrate the qualities of a hero. A hero is someone that shows loyalty, respect and is very courageous. In this Greek myth, Paris does not represent a hero when he does not show his love for Oenone when he gratefully leaves her to go seek out the most beautiful woman in all the world. Once Paris gives Aphrodite the golden apple claiming her to be the most beautiful among the three, Paris shouts "I am tired of living a shepherd's life. It is time for me to see more of the world. I shall go to Sparta as Aphrodite directs." (213). Paris is stating that no matter what Oenone says he has made up his mind to leave her and go to Sparta. The true meaning of loyalty would be Paris staying in Mount Ida to be with the one he truly loves rather than leave her and risk all that he has. In the following quote, Paris shows no heroic actions because he is not being loyal to Oenone. He willingly leaves her to follow Aphrodite and he does this with no regret. Another reason making me believe Paris is not a hero is he shows much greed when arriving in Sparta. while in Sparta, Paris tries to take Helen away from Menelaus . This makes Paris a non hero because a hero would be someone who would stay true to himself and not try to hurt other people for no reason at all. "Leave Menelaus and come with me"(213) Paris says. In this quote Paris is trying to get Helen to leave Menelaus and to go away with him. He shows no regard for Helen and Menelaus knowing that they are truly in love with each other. This is showing that Paris does not care about anyone besides himself and he will only do what he thinks is best for him. These characteristics demonstrate that Paris is in fact not a hero. All the qualities he portrays go against what is said to be a true hero. Therefore, Paris is not a hero in the Greek myth, "Paris and the Golden…

    The Trojan Women Summary

    • 685 Words
    • 3 Pages

In the beginning of The Trojan Women by Euripides, the city of Troy has been sacked, and Poseidon brings attention to Hecuba crying at the entrance of Troy. Poseidon lists the events unbeknownst to Hecuba, including her daughter Polyxena being killed by the Greeks in a sacrifice at Achilles’ tomb, Priam and Hecuba’s children are dead, and Apollo left Cassandra mad (Apollo made her his prophetess). Then enters Athena, who wants to bring joy to the Trojans and give the Greeks a bitter journey home. Poseidon and Athena agree to cause havoc on the Greeks’ journey home and then leave. Hecuba knows the Greek ships are waiting offshore ready to take her and the other Trojan women away to slavery. The chorus enters and asks Hecuba what might happen to them. Hecuba thinks they will be auctioned off to the Greeks. Talthybius gives Hecuba and the chorus information on who they were all assigned to. He tells Hecuba that Cassandra was taken by Agamemnon as his concubine, Polyxena has been assigned to Achilles’ tomb as an attendant, Andromache to the son of Achilles, and she is going to Odysseus. Cassandra enters with a burning torch and prophesies Agamemnon’s wife, Clytemnestra, will murder both her and Agamemnon. Talthybius is disgusted at Cassandra’s words and tells Hecuba to get ready to go on Odysseus’ ship. Cassandra responds by saying Hecuba will die in what is left of Troy, and she will join her mother in the underworld as a victor because she will have destroyed the house of Atreus. Hecuba faints and then asks where Polyxena is. Andromache enters with her son, Astyanax, and tells Hecuba about Polyxena’s fate as a sacrifice at Achilles’ tomb. Andromache tells Hecuba she believes Polyxena’s fate is far better than hers, and she would rather be dead than to live in misery. As Andromache and Hecuba finish speaking, Talthybius enters and tells Andromache the Greeks have decided to kill Astyanax. Andromache curses the Greeks, and Talthybius…

Paris’s non-courageous personality really gets to shine in this Book. When confronted with a one on one duel instead, Paris meekly refuses after realizing his opponent would be Menelaus himself. Later convinced by Hector, Paris prepares to fight Menelaus. However, the gods once again meddle in the affairs of humans and end up escalating things instead of making them better. Aphrodite saves Paris from his duel with Menelaus (which could have prevented the entire war) and takes him back to Priam’s palace with Helen. Helen scolds Paris for being a coward but…

In Philoctetes Odysseus and Neoptolemos are charged with the task of retrieving Philoctetes from the island he was left on by the Greek army. Once they get there they attempt to trick Philoctetes into giving them his bow, thinking this was all they needed to end the Trojan War. However after Philoctetes realizes it is Odysseus that is trying to trick him into going with them he refuses to go with them. Philoctetes tells them to go on without him and then begins to mope about his life. After arguing with Neoptolemos about going to Troy with them Herakles appears and settles everything. He does this by telling Philoctetes that he will go with them to Troy where he “will slay Paris – who was the cause of these troubles – and you will conquer Troy” (Page 96. 1617-1619). Herakles also tells Neoptolemos that they cannot win the war without Philoctetes and that Philoctetes cannot do it without him either. Philoctetes is also told that he will be healed of his disease and that he must remember to praise to gods after he has…
