Tripadvisor Connectivate Case

Whether you are interested in booking Hotel, looking for a place to go out to dinner or just checking out a nice place to go for your next vacation, Tripadvisor.com is the place to go.
Over ten years ago the only way to do any of these tasks would be going to a travel agent, that wasn’t available for you 24/7 and even so you wouldn’t really get all the possibilities or the best prices of the market. To look for a place to go Scuba Diving in the Caribbean you’d want to start by asking friends or family if they knew of someone that had gone there or if they by chance had gone there. You will probably end up going to your travel agent who was going to tell you the only rates she had and since you didn’t have something to compare it with and of course if your travel agent isn’t family or a really good friend, that’s going to cost you to.
Mainly Tripadvisor started out of the lack of an interactive travel site that could compare prices and ratings, that was available 24/7 and for free.
To stand out from other travel sites they designed a web community where everyone could rate the places on behalf of their experiences, and furthermore it is not just a travel site, it is more of a community where any company can advertise their own activity, restaurant, hotel or even services so people can rate them. Having the possibility to choose from various companies you can always look for the best rate at the best place.
When Tripadvisor started out, they probably used the SWOT framework to analyze their potential Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. From my point of view, when they started out their Strength was the possibility to get feedback from hundreds of thousands of users that would post reviews on the things they’ve done and the fact that you could be able to compare prices, be a travel agent 24/7 and for no cost to the user. Their Opportunities was the fact that no competitor on the market had this approach. A

    1. SWOT analysis is a marketing strategy used to find a company’s strengths and opportunities for a manager to take full advantage of them. The other two words are in the acronym are weaknesses and threats which the manager will try to work around or improve. This is needed for a company to make a marketing strategy and to become better than the competition. For example, if two companies both sold movies and they were pretty much the same in everything they do, people would go to either. But if one of those companies did a SWOT analysis and found that they can make finding these movies in the store a lot easier, then maybe they can attract more customers to their store. This would be seizing more opportunities and adding to their strengths. (pg. 49)…

TripAdvisor was founded in February 2000 by Stephen Kaufer, Langley Steinert, and several others. Stephen Kaufer says the original idea wasn't a user generated social media site to swap reviews. " We started as a site where we were focused more on those official words from guidebooks or newspapers or magazines. We also had a button in the very beginning that said visitors add your own review and boy did that just take off. Pretty soon the number of average consumer reviews far surpassed the number of "professional reviews". That is when the site really turned into this collection of what the normal traveller was saying whererever they were going. "[6] Original financing was obtained from Flagship Ventures, the Bollard Group and private investors.[7] The company was purchased by IAC/InterActiveCorp in 2004. IAC spun off its travel group of businesses under the Expedia, Inc. name in August 2005.[8]…

The number of travel agents has declined sharply during the last decade. According to an article of RockCheetah (www.rockcheetah.com, viewed on 12 May 2013) 30 per cent of all travel agents have had to close down since 2000. The reason of the major decline seem clear. The internet is infinitely popular and beholds many advantages over the rather old fashioned travel agents. The online booking of holidays is preferred by many people because of several reasons. The best rates are just few clicks away while various organisations and tour operators are compared simultaneously. Moreover, no additional charges have to be paid to a travel agent. Complementary, cars and traffic jams are avoided because it is no longer necessary to get in the car. All can be arranged from the comfort of a own home. Questioned is whether travel agencies still have any purpose in today's society and if they will last for another decade.…
