“Love in L.A.” (Short Story)
The setting of the story “Love in L.A.” takes place on the freeway of Los Angeles. The main character, Jake, is an immature, arrogant, irresponsible protagonist that is carelessly driving and daydreaming without a care in the world. Amidst the gridlock of traffic, he begins daydreaming about a car that is better than his 58’ Buick that has crushed velvet interior and an FM radio. It is his not paying attention and daydreaming that causes him to have an accident that leads to him hitting the car in front of him. Mariana, the driver of the other car, seems like she is a sweet and innocent young woman. She was on her way to work in the car that was given to her by her dad. Jake walks up to Mariana with confidence to ask her if she is okay and to also get her phone number.
Jake, on the other hand is very dishonest to Marianna from the get go. She asks him for his ID, and tells her it seems as though he left it back home in the pocket of a pair of pants. She then asks him for his address and phone number along with his insurance information, but instead of giving her his correct information he gives her phony ones instead. Before she leaves she gets his license plate number even though they were not legit either. Jake’s intentions are to run and not take full responsibility for his actions. The symbolism from this story is the freeway of Los Angeles. Jake feel the freedom of the open road when he is driving on the freeway and begins daydreaming that makes him have an accident. The theme for this story is fantasy, and includes Jake’s lies and deceptions. Almost everything that Jake says to Mariana, she takes to heart. The author’s tone of the author is that he sees himself as Jake. The author seems as though he is

Traditional love stories have honest, generous, and sometimes wealthy men who show up on white horses to sweep women off their feet. These stories demonstrate how two strangers can meet unexpectedly, fall in love and live happily ever after. Most romantic associations these days don’t follow this pattern and the only time you can see it nowadays is in movies. This story goes against the tradition from the beginning when Gilb defines Jake as a self-absorbed, unemployed playboy. The lies that ensue just go on to exhibit the differences between usual love stories and this love story. Throughout the entire story the audience is able to understand and identify gender roles associations and stereotype characterization through the dialog between characters, the thoughts of characters and how Gilb wants us to insert our own conceptions of the male and female stereotypes.…

Fiction Response When reading the short story “Love in L.A.” by Dagoberta Gilb most readers will notice the importance of the characters and how they shape the outcome of the story. This story is truly character driven, meaning the plot relies on the characters, which makes it a very powerful literary element in this case. Jake, the protagonist of the fictional piece, can easily be envisioned as a young man with a carefree attitude who does not really care much about other people and their situations. One can tell Jake is definitely a pretty young man due to some of the things he daydreams about at the beginning of the story and the fact that he is daydreaming instead of paying attention to the road. Some of these thoughts include the brief idea of getting a steady job and his fantasies regarding his lifestyle (Gilb, 113). His carefree attitude can be seen through his dialogue with Mariana after the accident with remarks such as “So how ya doing? Any damage to the car? I’m kinda hoping so, just so it takes a little more time and we can talk some. Or else you can give me your phone number now and I won’t have to lay my regular b.s. on you to get it later.” (Gilb, 114) Even though Jake has just been in a car accident he was at fault for that could have severely injured someone he still has the idea of flirting with one of the other drivers involved. Jake is also the kind of guy who prefers to stay out of trouble for his own sake and his wallet’s, which is why he gives Mariana false information and uses license plates from scrapped cars in order to avoid paying for things he doesn’t want to pay for (Gilb, 114-115). Jake’s young, carefree attitude is seen again after he drives off from the accident with him instantly going back to fantasizing about making his car awesome without a single worry about what just happened (Gilb 115).…

He is no longer the almost reckless lawyer ready to give up anything for a case. He has faced the polarizing issue of discrimination head on, and has limped away scared. No matter what the verdict is, Jake will not only have to rebuild his house, but also his relationship with his family and friends that he has had to give up for this case. He is realizing that he does not think through when he takes this case. He has no idea that any of the violence and intimidation he experiences could have came from a murder case. Even in one of the most racist places in the world, rural Mississippi, no one would expect the trauma, pain, and violence that Jake, his friends, and family have had to endure. Throughout the novel as tensions, stress, and attacks increase, so does Jake’s drinking. Similarly to Johnny in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Jake copes with suffering through the bottle. Jake is thoroughly changed throughout the book. The fresh law school graduate has had to confront death and suffering, leaving him unnerved and wary. His transformation closely mimics the archetype of a hero, a “rite of passage” of suffering that matures the protagonist from bold and reckless to scarred and…

We as humans have learned to be considerate of people and their differences, we have also encouraged the development of all human beings. But many years ago people were not considerate of people of other ethnicities. The possibilities for everyone have become more equal during modern times. I have been intrigued by the racial and ethical dilemmas that most of our ancestors had to endure. The short story that I have chosen to discuss is “The Welcome Table” By Alice Walker. The human race has come so far since we have had such severe racial discrimination, although it has not disappeared completely. " The Welcome Table", along with many other new age stories really have shown the importance of acceptance of many ethnicities.…
