LETTER FROM A FRIEND

Boys----------- I am writing to say how much I care for you. I want you to know me better.

Raffy---------- When you awoke this morning. I exploded a brilliant sunrise through your window.

Boys----------- Hoping to get attention.

All------------- But you didn't even notice.

Girls---------- Later, you were walking with friends. I bathed you in warm sunshine and perfumed the air with flowers.

Boys---------- Still you didn't notice me.

All------------- So I shouted to you in a thunderstorm, and painted a beautiful rainbow. You didn't even look!

All------------ tonight, I spilled light on your face and sent a cool breeze to refresh you. As you slept, over you and shared your thoughts.

Raffy--------- But you were unaware of my presence.

All------------ I hope you will talk me soon.

Anie--------- I love you very much.

Anie---------- Your friend, JESUS.

Russian formalism was an influential school of literary criticism in Russia from the 1910s to the 1930s. It includes the work of a number of highly influential Russian and Soviet scholars such as Viktor Shklovsky,Yuri Tynianov, Vladimir Propp, Boris Eichenbaum, Roman Jakobson, Boris Tomashevsky, Grigory Gukovsky who revolutionized literary criticism between 1914 and the 1930s by establishing the specificity and autonomy of poetic language and literature. Russian formalism exerted a major influence on thinkers like Mikhail Bakhtin and Yuri Lotman, and on structuralism as a whole. The movement's members had a relevant influence on modern literary criticism, as it developed in the structuralist and post-structuralist periods. Under Stalin it became a pejorative term for elitist art.

A school of literary theory and analysis that emerged in Russia around 1915, devoting itself to the study of literariness, i.e. the sum of 'devices' that distinguish literary language from ordinary language. In

The style of formalism shows scenes as they can be imagined. They’re deliberately stylized and / or distorted using methods such as slow motion or adding colors into scenes. For example, in Shcindler’s List, a scene is shot in black and white except for a little girls red jacket. The viewer is forced to watch this little girl because we assume that she is important since she is the only color in a washed out scene. Formalism depicts scenes in a way that a person can not see with the eye in real life. Avant garde films are an example of extreme formalism.…

The study of literature takes its place somewhere between history and philosophy and history is about events and the people who make them, about the long process by which the human race adapted the earth to its purpose and about the tools and, institutions and societies it created. Literature, however, is a branch of cultural studies, a study of the patterns shaped by society which in turn shape our ways of seeing the world and the ideas we have about it.…

Yet to suppose that we can even begin to cover all the world or all great literature, though the word “survey” be understood ever so broadly, would be presumptuous. (For instance, most of the non-Western works we shall study are Indo-Chinese: nothing from Japan, nothing from Africa, and just a bit from the Islamic world.) Hence my second general objective is based on the stylistic relationship mentioned above: you will acquire in this course a functional comprehension (which you will be able to apply to works and times not covered here) of the main characteristics distinguishing oral and literate cultures. The history of literature around the world has continually migrated along this spectrum, though at very differing rates. Hence the spectrum’s study is what the ancient Greeks would have called a…

During this half semester to studies about theory I have known about the kind of theory in Literature. There are at least nine kind of theory which I have done studied. The first theory is Russian Formalism which special to use for the language which tend to the text which attempted to discriminate systematically between art and non-art and one of the most famous dichotomies introduced by the mechanistic formalist is distinction between story (fabula) and plot (sjuzhet). My analysis about this theory is maybe it will be great if we also analyses about the background of the literary works too, not only with analyses the text. I think the background of the text of literary works also important to being analyses. The second theory is New Criticism, is the theory which have the similar think with Russian but at this theory we also analyses the text by moral values and cultures. I think it’s better than the last one before because this theory is not depend based on the text analysis but also include about moral and cultural value of literary works. The third theory is Structuralism, It has the same analysis with the theory before but it will be more batter than before because there is also analysis about the situation and condition. The Fourth is Existentialism; existence is the point for this theory. If you existed you will become a good person and the most important thing is how we can fight our existence to continue our life.…

The theories of the remarkable philosopher and literary critic Mikhail Bakhtin have made significant impingement on the 20th century philosophical boundaries, correlating the evolution of the literary-theoretical thinking. His novelty has exhibit concentration in the theoretical area whereas Bakhtin has discovered in his own way, resolutions of two significant problems: the theoretical bond of the language presented in the novel to the spoken language and the real foundations of the novel. Bakhtins view conceive the spoken 'word' as a social event, which shape and essence emanates altogether in one single unit, where the idea of social context is intimately related with the idea of the expressive style of a prose, logically obtaining a social status to the genre. Ideally, Bakhtins views are focused specifically on the conception of the 'word' within a dialogue. Within his ideas, the novel is unnaturally structured variety of many social speeches and unique voices where 'No living word relates to its object in a singular way' (DIN 276, M. B). Accordingly to Bakhtins theory, the novel continuously proceeds to present various context layers for a particular concentration of period phenomenons, people and culture. To him the novel is ever lasting living, artistically structured entity, compressing and uncovering the historical events by the exact precision transpired in the cultural and social realism in the form of dialogue, “ agitated and…
