Hub City Transit Development With a population of 50,000 plus residents, Hattiesburg is seen as the fifth largest city in the state of Mississippi. It is also known as, “Hub City of the South” and is home to The University of Southern Mississippi, William Carey University, Antonelli College, Pearl River Community College, and Healing Touch School of Massage Therapy. This population in itself consists of 24,355 college students which is not including the hundreds of faculty and staff members hired to assist. Although Hattiesburg is mostly looked upon as a college town, it holds a number of family businesses and has numerous amounts of agricultural land. Locals (from Petal, Brookhaven, Jackson, Gulf Port) and even natives of New Orleans come to visit on a regular basis. The city of Hattiesburg is continuously expanding and many new innovative means have been created with its development for advancement. However, the city lacks an important element that can help make any town more modernized, which is an effective public transportation system. Public transportation systems are said to be for a means of helping people make their daily lives easier at a low cost. Not only do these systems provide convenience to people in urban areas they also are designed to reduce the traffic congestion, or at least not increase the rate at which it already is. These benefits all sound great for advancing the productivity of Americans, however, when a person thinks about public transportation they automatically think that it is a way of helping everyone. But this is not true. Professor at University of Wisconsin Green Bay, Steven Dutch, says, “the mass transit really didn 't save much time, especially counting waiting time at both ends and the transfer from bus to subway. And it was impossible to do anything productive riding mass transit. Plus there was no privacy or peace and quiet” (Why Don 't People Use Mass Transit). This is to say that

    A case study conducted in Boulder, Colorado regarding the reliability of the bus routes, and the hidden cost associated to commuters. Automatic Vehicle Locator (AVL) technology was used to determine whether a bus route was on time or late. The study set a specific timeframe where the bus route could be late or early and be considered on time. The study developed an equation and did the math for a person earning the minimum wage in Boulder, Colorado. The unreliability of a bus route to arrive on time was causing commuters to almost $700 of hidden additional costs per year9 . Considering a one-way travel fare costs about $2.60, this additional $700 are more than enough to pay for more than a year worth of one-way fares. The minimum wage in Los Angeles is higher than in Boulder, so we can predict a higher scaled up value would be found in Los Angeles, but would also depend on the reliability of Los Angeles’ Metro lines. This study showed an example of how those taking public transportation is costing users more than they could ever imagine. This study incorporated only a limited amount of factors into their time-value equation. Many more factors can be included in these will alter the hidden costs associated with taking public transportation.     Every citizen in every city, town, state and borough all around the world use public transport on a day-to-day basis. Surely this would indicate that at least one city, town, state or borough in the whole world would be able to successfully reach a bus stop on time. That would make sense wouldn’t it? However, wherever you go in the world – whether that be in London, New York, Paris or Tokyo – I am certain you would find one thing in common with their public transport system; they are all utterly horrendous. This fact is true even without all the additional problems, and there are quite a few of those, to say the least. S. cities in 2007. The primary determinant of ridership appears to be availability of public transportation service. In fact, the relationship is nearly one to one: a 1% increase in availability is associated with a 1% increase in ridership. The relative unimportance of price may be an indicator of the heavy subsidization of fares in most cities, leaving availability as the more effective policy tool to encourage use of public transport. This is an important issue that has been studied by others in various ways. Glaeser et al. (2008), find that the availability of public transportation is a major explanatory factor in urban poverty. Glaeser and Shapiro find evidence that car cities, where a large percentage of people drive themselves to work, grew at the expense of public transportation cities as the percentage of cities’ population taking public transportation declined between 1980 and 2000. Murray et al. (1998), conclude that the performance of a public transport system is determined largely by the proximity of public transport stops to the regional population. Initially, the data were gathered for the top 136 metropolitan statistical areas in the U.S. using the raw number of unlinked trips on public transportation as the measure of ridership. Due to the wide variation in population and ridership across cities, the per-capita unlinked trips were calculated for use as the dependent variable.
