Transformational Theory In Nursing Care
Discussion of student’s response to the management position and management/ leadership
I thought charge nurse Jo did a fantastic job in managing the flow of the entire unit. I believe that she uses a transformational approach with a democratic leadership background. Democratic leadership is a type of leadership style that incorporate the whole group to participate in decision making. Leadership theories such as transformational leadership are constantly used to guide nursing leadership research by projecting positive outcomes (Dabke, 2016). After report, the charge nurse will have to prioritize and plan out the day depending on the patient’s diagnosis. If a patient has a medical diagnosis of a myocardial infraction, heart failure, pneumonia, venous thromboembolism, and/or stroke, then a core measure process must be performed (VanSuch, et.al, 2013). For example, a patient with heart failure must follow specific guidelines in treating the diagnosis to prevent readmission. “Heart failure is one of the diseases that a hospital can choose to assess. Three of the Joint Commission’s heart failure core measures are evidence based: assessment of left ventricular functions (LVF), prescription of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE) and provision of adult smoking cessation advice and counseling” (VanSuch, et.al, 2013). The purpose of nursing core measure is to provide quality measures upon admission and discharge. Studies shows that patients who received all medical instructions were significantly less likely to be readmitted for any cause related to core measures (VanSuch, et.al. 2013). Therefore, the charge nurse will send reminders and facilitate the completion of the core measure (Normand, et.al, …show more content…
She has almost ten plus years of experience of being a charge nurse. However, many times, nurses who are not ready for a complex role may often be forced into the leadership roles due to shortage of staff (Sherman, et.al, 2011). Then it is important for the nurse to reconsider the role of a charge nurse because a charge nurse has many critical responsibilities. After shadowing a charge nurse, I understand that with rising patient acuity, and shortage off staff, it is extremely challenging to maintain flow of the unit while trying to provide high quality patient
