Transformational Leadership In The Military
I believe in transformational leadership. Transformational leadership is a style of leadership where a leader works with subordinates to identify needed change, creates a vision of what that change end result should be, and executes those changes with the combined help of his subordinates through inspiration and charisma. I find that it is far easier to tell a soldier to “do as I do” than to try and explain how to become successful in the military. I have continuously molded and changed my leadership philosophy over the past two years. I promoted to E5 Sergeant in February of 2015 and have held an E6 squad leader position since July of 2015. A high level of charisma can overcome many obstacles such as low morale, bad attitudes, and difficult conditions.
4.) Trust and failure: In my opinion, establishing trust in my subordinates is the most difficult part of leading a squad. I believe that you must allow for others to fail in order for them to learn from their mistakes. The most difficult part of this is delegating responsibility to the lowest level and enabling the trust for them to accomplish the task or mission. I must also trust the soldier to own the task and make sure they accomplish it to the best of their ability.
I have learned a lot about applying my leadership philosophy over the past two years. I am in charge of my platoon’s physical training plan. In August of 2016 I changed our training schedule to increase the overall performance of the soldiers in the platoon. I set the example of training with intensity and pushing the soldiers with rigorous physical training. I saw an opportunity to instill the growing stronger philosophy in the soldiers of the platoon by enabling them to take ownership of the PT program. In September of 2016, I began assigning soldiers as primary instructors for PT and giving them the opportunity to take ownership of the task. Overall our platoon APFT average increased by 20

I removed myself from the team leader positions and put soldiers in charge of the training and culminating exercises instead. This accomplished trust in the soldiers and allowed them room for failure and growth. After every iteration of training I pulled the soldier in charge for the iteration and gave them personal feedback. I encouraged them to remain charismatic and trust the soldiers around them to accomplish their missions. These simple actions led to overall success of the training events and received high accolades from the Observer Controllers (OC) for my unit’s ability to perform leader development while training for

    There are many awards given out for leadership; however, watching Marines succeed because of the time and effort that their leaders have invested in them can be far more rewarding than any medal or certificate. There are many different methods and theories on leadership; however, some approaches are almost universal amongst leaders. Leadership is a continuous process, which requires limitless dedication that will constantly push Marines to their limits. Leaders should know not to fraternize with their subordinate Marines because of the ramifications that this causes, such as a loss of respect for the leader, and a loss of overall discipline. Leaders should know how to approach their Marines in any situation, and strive to understand their Marines’ strengths and weaknesses in order to help the Marines improve themselves.     I would like to reveal first and foremost that Trust, Loyalty, and Discipline are three exceedingly furthermost important characters of a person and or soldier. Trust is to and I quote “ rely on somebody or something”, “ confidently allow somebody to do something”, and “place something in somebody’s care”. This day and age in order to gain trust in a person you must have confidence in them to act accordingly of what was asked upon them of you. The situation can either go two ways positive or negative. In the positive form you can gain a sense of Trust in this person or there actions when they complete what you ask of them to do. In a negative sense the person can completely be unsuccessful at what was asked and now that shows you that you can’t Trust them simply because they were unsuccessful, but just because they were unsuccessful it may be reason behind it, if the person simply failed because they were lazy and just didn’t want to do it that is a good enough reason not to put ANY more trust in that person. If the person did all they could do to complete what was asked but they ran into situations that were completely out of there hands then you cant too much blame them and not trust them. As far as trust within the unit I think you have to have an good unit moral to have good trust within the unit. Good trust and unit moral comes with normal day to day things and how the people within the unit treat each other. If all the or the majority of the NCO’s were bad influences and there not good leaders in general the soldiers will not put no Trust into there NCO’s simply because there not being good leaders so therefore they can’t be trusted by there actions of being an unsuccessful NCO. If it was the other way around and the NCO’s were being all they could be for there soldiers, showing, teaching, helping, and assisting (Leading The Way) the soldiers would Trust there NCO’s and know they will be there for them and they will not let them down.
