Transactional Vs Transformational Leadership
I scored a total of 37 points on the Transactional or Transformational Leader Self-Assessment scale, which runs from 10 points (meaning leans more toward transactional leadership) to 50 points (meaning leans more toward transformational leader). As Daft et. al. (2010) mentions, many leaders perform both transactional and transformational behaviors. Despite not learning anything new, per se, there are a number of things that I can still take away from this self-assessment. As detailed in the article “Wilderness leadership on the job”, just as leadership may be absent where it is expected, leadership often appears in unexpected places. The authors strongly suggest that there can be no leaders without followers, how a leader performs is contingent on their situation and placement rather than just their style. Followership and Transactional leadership occurs in numerous forms, the inside and outside organizations. Both Followership and Transactional leaders use their power and position to convince followers to comply so that they and followers will benefit. While Transactional leaders take people as they are, motivating through their existing needs and aspirations, leaders appeal to lower level needs of their followers.…

This describes, in essence, the perspective of the Industrial Age/transactional-style of leader towards their subordinated. Though to be clear, there is a distinction to be made between the transactional-style, proper, and that style as it was in history, subject to the social, economic, technological contexts of the Industrial Era. The transactional leader “does not individualize the needs of subordinates or focus on their personal development. Transactional leaders exchange things of value with subordinates to advance their own and their subordinates’ agendas (Northouse, 181).” This style of leadership is actually given some further perspective by Quinn, who writes that:====================…

According to Bass (1985), followers led by transformational leaders tend to perform beyond expected levels due to the influence of the leaders. This may be due to the extra effort they put in as a result of their commitment to the leader, the sense of purpose or mission that drives them or their high levels of intrinsic motivation. In a research carried out by Carless (2000), it was found that followers of transformational leaders tend to be more productive and satisfied workers than followers of transactional…

To improve on the two that I currently feel that I am and to incorporate the two that I am not, intellectual stimulation and inspirational motivation, I will have to use all the principles learned in the Intermediate Leadership Experience. I am fortunate to have served in the United States Navy for 26 years because throughout my career my style of leadership evolved as I matured and my level of responsibility increased. Initially, I was a transactional leader because it was a way of separating me from my peers to alleviate chances of fraternization. The chain of command was strict in giving direction and the expectations were exacting in standards in accordance with approved guidelines. About half way through my career, I was a middle manager and earned the respect of my peers through performance and longevity so my leadership style shifted to transformational. I was successful because my senior leadership afforded me the leeway and held me accountable for the product rather…
