Tragic Characters In Sophocles Antigone
In Sophocles’ play Antigone, he creates two tragic characters. A tragic character is someone who experience’s unfortunate events that led to his or her own destruction. Antigone is a character who is Headstrong she will do anything for her family dead or alive. She is willing to go through anything and suffer the consequences ahead. For instance Antigone is being headstrong when she is speaking to her sister Ismene and is arguing with her about Creon’s law of punishment if anyone buries their brother Polyneices. “But if I must die, I say this crime is holy: I shall lie with him in death and I shall be as dear to him as he to me (Pro.L.57-60). Antigone wants the best for her brother so he can join the afterlife and not have his soul imprisoned for eternity. She is ready to go through the treacherous course of burying her brother. “Leave me to my foolish plan: I am not afraid of the danger; if it means death, it will not be the worst of deaths-death without honor.” (Pro.L. 86-88) Even if she has no one to help her, she is still doing the task without hesitation. Her sister says in foolish, but she does not want to give up. She knows that if she dies it is honorable. People will respect her and not abhorrent her. She is still being hardheaded and not thinking about what she is going to do and how it can affect people. She can possibly hurt someone. She does not realize what can happen to her own safety and others. Even if it means death she is not afraid just like the danger up ahead in her journey. She knows that she can get caught but she is in the moment of wanting her brother to have a proper burial and not thinking of what happens next.
