Toyota Brand Campaigns
As a monolithic corporate brand, Toyota has been using both product-led communications around specific cars as well as corporate-led communications around themes identified in its Global Vision document. TKM has invested Rs 9 billion in its plant at Bidadi in Karnataka. The joint venture company's advertising budget has skyrocketed from Rs 140 million in the year 2000 to Rs 430 million in 2003.

TKM managing director Atsushi Toyoshima proudly announced that the joint venture (JV) company has rolled out its 100,000th domestically-produced vehicle within three years of its launch in India. "At present, we produce and sell around 45,000 vehicles per annum and expect to cross the 200,000-mark within two years. We might consider launching a large-volume small car in the near future but the present focus will be on Qualis, Corolla and Camry," says Toyoshima. He also claims that the JV company currently has 2,300 employees as compared to 850 in 2000.
Talking about the future, TKM vice chairman Vikram Kirloskar says, "The reductions in the excise duties announced during Budget 2003-04 and the good monsoons have fuelled the growth of India's automobile industries. In fact, the domestic auto industry has grown by 17 per cent. By 2010, the Indian market will touch volumes of 1.7 million units and TKM will be well-positioned to grab a sizable chunk of the market. Globally, Toyota Motors has set a target of grabbing 15 per cent of the world automobile sales by 2010."

While unveiling the Qualis FS, Kirloskar made a presentation about the strategy undertaken by TKM in India. Some excerpts are as under:
a) Our success story signifies unrelenting attention on two pillars - customer-focus and quality. Our elaborate market research conducted prior to the launch showed that Indian customers desired a novel driving experience. Customers also sought spacious cars and enhanced driving comfort.
b) Our campaign "We have 100 answers" focused on perfection at the dealer end. We

    Toyota’s analysis does a very good job of recognizing their weaknesses and threats for each action they want to take and for general risks. By recognizing threats such as the Kyoto Protocol, it gives us reason to believe that Toyota is very much looking into the future for how to expand. This analysis adds confidence to their endeavours. One of the key weaknesses they also look into is their overdependence on the Japanese market. In the analysis, they state that their profits dropped 20.6% in Japan over the fiscal year of 2009. This is quite serious when 67.3% of their total revenue is made up from their Japanese market. Still, while Toyota realizes their fault in depending on mostly on Japan, the new areas they want to expand in bring questions. One place they listed for increasing focus is in India. This is a very risky move on Toyota’s part due to the new Tata Nano. The Nano is being released exclusively in India for the first few months and already has a high turnaround predicted. Even though India appears to be a very good market for expansion due to their low penetration ratio (eight per one thousand people), it’s hard to believe focusing on the Indian market will be worthwhile, especially since Tata Motors is headquartered in India. Another area that seems odd for Toyota to try and expand is in China. China currently is still a very good spot for cheap costs on production. However, it is predicted that China will continue to increase its labour costs. These increasing costs will greatly diminish the attractiveness of expansion and focus in China.     To start with, TKM released its maiden offer— Qualis. Qualis is not a newly conceived, designed, and brought out vehicle. Rather it is the new avatar of Kijang under which brand the vehicle was sold in markets like Indonesia. Qualis virtually had no competition. Telco’s Sumo was not a multi-utility vehicle like Qualis. Rather, it was a mini-truck converted into a rugged all-purpose van. More importantly, Toyota proved that even its old offering, but decked up for India, could offer better quality than its competitor. Backed by a carefully thought out advertising campaign that communicated Toyota’s formidable global reputation, Qualis went on a roll and overtook Tata Sumo within two years of launch. Sumo sold 25,706 vehicles during 2000—2001, compared to a 3 per cent growth over the previous year, compared to 25,373 of Qualis. But during 2001—2002, it was a different story. Qualis had been clocking more than 40 per cent share of the market. At the end of Sept 2001, Qualis had sold over 25,000 units, compared to Sumo’s 18000 plus. The heady initial success has made TKM think of the future with robust confidence. By 2010, TKM wants to make and sell one million vehicles per year and garner one-third share of the Indian market. The firm is planning to introduce a wide range of vehicles—a sub-compact, a sedan, a luxury car and a new multiutility vehicle to replace Qualis.
