In order to create a behavior intervention plan behavior analysts have to conduct a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA). This assessment is necessary to determine what the functions of the problem behaviors serve. A functional behavior assessment helps to create a behavior intervention to decrease the problem behaviors and increase a more appropriate behavior (Cooper, Heron, & Howard, 2007). Furthermore, FBA also includes the illness, client’s medical condition and medications they may be taking. After utilizing direct observations, functional analysis and interviews behavior analyst can address the problem behaviors the client needs improvement with. It is essential to determine which behavior needs to be changed first. When behaviors poses any danger to a client or others it should be addressed immediately (Cooper, et al., 2007). Behavior analysts must define the target behaviors clearly so any one can understand what they are observing and recording. Toby’s…

Tourette Syndrome is a neurological disorder that is characterized by sudden repetitive and involuntary movements or vocalizations that are generally termed “tics”. These tics can have different degrees of intensity ranging from simple to complex. Simple motor tics are brief, sudden, and repetitive movements that involve a limited number of muscle groups. They include facial grimacing, eye blinking and other eye movements, and head or shoulder jerking. Simple vocalizations include repetitive sniffing, throat clearing, or grunting sounds. Complex motor tics are distinct and coordinated patterns of movements that involve multiple muscle groups and may sometimes seem purposeful. These tics might include facial grimacing combined with head twist…

Autism spectrum disorders are life long and have been found to be prevalent in up to 1% of the adolescent population (Simonoff et al., 2008). Many studies have shown that the prevalence of autism spectrum disorders have increased radically (Vismara & Rogers, 2008). However, there may be many cases not yet reported or diagnosed correctly. The disorder covers a range of individuals with impairments that change from one person to the next. One individual may have difficulty with language communication and another might have more difficulty with repetition. Since ASDs have an early onset, it is important to identify the disorder early so that interventions can be initiated (Simonoff et al., 2008). The disability is life long and treatment is needed…
