Touching the Void
Part B: Personal Reflection

Explain what you have learnt about the concept of Overcoming Adversity after viewing the file ‘Touching the Void’? Use examples from the movie to assist your explanation.

I have learnt a lot about overcoming adversity from viewing the film, ‘Touching the Void’. The first thing I learned from the film, was the true meaning of adversity, I learnt that it was any time when you are great misfortune, whether it is big or small. Another important thing and probably the biggest message from the movie was, if you persevere and don’t quit or cower due to a problem you will always be able to overcome adversity.

I felt as if I learned valuable coping strategies in times of struggle or despair. An example of this is setting small goals, to reach your one overall goal. In Joe’s case he set goals for himself to reach a certain point in a specific amount of time to reach his overall goal of survival and getting back down to base camp. Another thing I learned about overcoming adversity, is that you have to make decisions at all times you just can’t sit there, even if you make a wrong decision. Joe said these word specifically himself in the interview. He mentioned along with this statement that is the only way to overcome survival or adversity. Joe used coping strategies to help him survive if it weren’t for these simple key coping strategies he most likely wouldn’t have survived.

I learnt to be more prepared for anything that comes toward you. Always have everything you need to tackle a task. I realized that Joe and Simon both would have been in much better shape if they had prepared more for the climb. They didn’t have enough as to help them get water, which ultimately ended to Joe’s hallucination.

In the end I learnt a lot about the concept of overcoming adversity, I learnt that you never give up, always believe in yourself, use coping strategies that work for you, and always be prepared for any situation. If you follow theses

Adversity can bring out the positive and negative sides in a person. In “The Proof of Worth,” Edgar Albert Guest demonstrates how challenges in life can help someone understand what he or she is capable of during a hardship. Similarly, “The Importance of Adversity in Growth and Development” written by Patrick Kohan exemplifies how children will never learn how to conquer an obstacle if they are always given assistance. Furthermore, Laura Hillenbrand’s novel, Unbroken, indicates that experiencing problems can affect the way a person’s body reacts and thinks about a difficult moment. Ultimately, the authors highlight that obstacles can be a complex or helpful task, as well as benefit people in the future when they need to know their true talents.…

Adversity is either chosen or brought upon someone; either way, the obstacle is either overcome or not. No matter wealth, age, or location, all people face adversity for it is synonymous with life. Life is the struggle for survival and success and order, while adversity is the representation of disorder and failure. Without either, it would be impossible to differentiate one’s achievements from one’s failures. Overcoming adversity is the basis of all great, successful people similarly to how concrete and steel is the foundation of all astonishing architectural structures.…

This experience illustrated to me that you will often need to rely on other people to help get you through tough situations, just as they will need to rely on you. Even the smallest encouragement can boost a person’s spirit and help them conquer the toughest of obstacles. During the hike, we pushed each other to do better, giving encouragement when it was needed, especially when we felt we couldn’t take one more step. There will be challenges that I have to face in the future, but I now know to overcome them. Working together, people can achieve greater things than they can on their…

There is several things that I would have to say I have had to use to make sure that I have continued on the course of action in spite of obstacles and that I have had to use to maintain my focus. Just to name a couple of obstacles that I have had to overcome being injured while I was in the United States Army, dealing with the everyday pain from those injuries, making the decision to go back to school and get my degree, maintaining a grade point average of better than a 3.0 and that is just a couple the list could go on and on. When i got injured I knew that my army career and life was over but I didn’t let this stop me from doing everything that I could I had to dig down deep within me and say I may walk with a cane for the rest of my life but I am not going to stop me. The pain that I have been dealing with and will continue to deal with for the better part of my life is a constant uphill battle but, one thing that I use to overcome this is I tell myself when it gets so bad I cant even get out of bed the pain is there to tell me and show me that I am still alive and that my children need me. When it came to going back to school it was a no brainer but still a battle inside me.…
