Torture Yourself Research Paper
Every person at some point in their lives has compared themselves to someone, whether it was a co-worker, a best friend, or even a complete stranger; we’ve all done it. But my question is why? Why does a person choose to torture themselves this way? Has one ever remembered a time when they compared themselves to someone for something they didn’t have and felt good about it afterwards? By doing this foolish act we are relinquishing our joy that we had possessed inside ourselves for our own achievements because our neighbor seems to have it better.
It’s almost hard to pin point the exact moment one may start to compare themselves to something, because for some it seems so natural. The work place is the perfect environment for one to compare

“people may compare themselves with others in their immediate environment or in mass media in order to judge their own personal worth (293). Frisby states that individuals compare their selves for various reasons “to determine relative standing on an issue or related ability; emulate behaviors; determine norms; lift spirits or feel better about life and personal situations; and evaluate emotions, personality, and self-worth (292). There is also the upward comparison in which there is a individual who is superior to or better off another individual, but on the other hand “self improvement is the main effect of an upward comparison because the targets serve as role models, teaching and motivating individuals to achieve or overcome similar problems…

I really enjoyed reading your discussion post. I always find it interesting when reading another's classmates discussion post. When it comes to interacting with you customer and keeping them happy, you nailed it. You said, "we are constantly being rewarded for providing excellent service, in the end what is more important than job security." Without job security, you and your family could be jobless. Why should I spend my hard earn money at said place of business, when, me the customer who basically pays you bills, is feeling somewhat slighted?…

Immigrants shouldn’t be restricted from coming to the U.S, legally. Illegal immigrants should be deported and we should put more money into our border patrol to enforce our borders. We should have control of who comes into our country and how. A wall would be too expensive and too troublesome, so I think we should just stick with the fences we have now and bulk up our border patrol.…

People have a nasty habit to think of people who have been lonely and bullied as outsiders, although outsiders are just people who are completely misunderstood and judged the wrong way. If people took the time to know these “outsiders” people mistreat, they would understand that these people are just normal kids that got mistreated badly. Nobody wants to be an “outsider”, but sometimes you become one for various of different reasons like being a new kid, being smarter than most kids, wanting to be alone, and more.…

Parents have always struggled with ways to appropriately discipline their children, especially in modern culture. Several years ago there would have been no question about acceptable forms of punishment. Today people can not parent their children the way they want to. There are radical groups out there that are dictating the way we care for them, and this is not right. When did society become so manipulative over our parental duties? Even in today’s society, a good old-fashioned spanking is still a beneficial form of punishment.…

Spanking is seen in both views of bad and good. Many parents decide to use spanking as a method of discipline. Some parents do not use spanking as a method of discipline because it is seen as abuse. I will use many resources off the internet. Many of my resources are big internet pages like CNN, College websites, Blogs, Newspapers, and many more! Some questions I am going to ask are going to revolve around why parents use spanking as a discipline, what messages parents try to get across to their kids, why people view spanking as abuse, and many more. Participants in this essay are going to be reporters on this topic all over the…

Society tends to believe that attending to college is something that everyone should do in order to live a successful and prosperous life. After doing research about the benefits of college, read different perspectives and opinions of different authors my view about college has changed. A lot of kids think that in order to get accepted into college you need to have perfect test scores and an exceptional gpa but that’s not true. Angel B. Perez in the article, Want to Get Into College? Learn to Fail, asserts that college admission officers want to get to know the student applying outside of his/her academic history. There is no doubt that you mean well and all you want for us students is to succeed and do well in life, and there is also no doubt you enjoy wasting students’ time. Seven hours feels like an eternity and it is not really necessary. Five hours and a half hours is plenty. One hour for Language arts, one hour for science, one hour math, one hour for History and thirty minutes for lunch. I enjoy sleeping. It releases tension and stress that you put on me for the seven hours prior to that moment. But, what I don’t enjoy is the sound of my alarm. It just reminds me that I have to go and listen to how earth is made of rock, how Pi is an irrational number, why George Washington was our president and where periods go and don’t go. I mean don’t get me wrong I love learning new things and I think it is important to know certain things but seriously seven hours? How is that helping anything? My alarm is just part of the problem. You’re the real problem. Oh, how I would love to hit snooze on my alarm, but if I miss a day or a few the person that takes care of me and is actually essential to my life might have to attend Court.…

People also long for others to think highly of them, “when people think well of us, it helps us think well of ourselves” (Myers, 2010, p. 41). It is coined as the looking glass self; “we use our interactions with others as a mirror for our own thoughts and actions, our sense of self depends on how we interpret what others do and say” (Kendall, 2010,…

When I think about invidious comparison and if I’ve ever done it, there is only one answer, yes. Unfortunately I feel that I compare myself to many different people at different times. It could be the guy at the grocery store, or the guy on TV, it could even be one of my friends. The truth is I compare myself to other people in order to make myself feel better. Understandably this is an immoral thing to do, I feel as if I put people down in my mind just to feel better. I do believe though that I am not the only one who does this. I feel that every person in the world compares themselves to another individual, whether they choose to or not, it might happen unconsciously. I vividly remember this one time where I compared myself not to a man but a woman, yes a woman. This happened about ten years ago. This woman was in her twenty-nine, she was happily married, had a great job and family, but most of all she looked happy, genuinely happy. True happiness, I felt was hard to come by. People always had something negative to say about their life such as, “ugh my wife is so annoying,” “ugh I hate my job,” “ugh my kids are driving me crazy.” This woman though, she was different. I never heard one negative thing come out of her mouth, and I’ve known her for many, many years. I always thought to myself that I wanted to be just like her, well the make version of course. I always compared my life to hers, she had a great job, and I had a mediocre job. She was happily married, I was in an on and off again relationship. She had a very happy…
