He was a definite victim of ethnic stratification for numerous reasons. In order to get into college he needed to receive a minimum score of 700 on his SATs. Growing up in a neighborhood where education is not the dominant force meant that this would be somewhat of a struggle. Not to mention being a father of an infant baby. He went against all odds and made it happen. He did not use his under privileged high school as a crutch, but more so as a clutch to switch gears and move forward. Both he and Tre were college bound. Exclusion was unsuccessful in stopping these young black men. You would think that the hood would applaud his success, but instead they killed it, literally. He was murdered after finding out that he got the scholarship that he had worked so hard for. His mother blamed Doughboy and obviously the gang member had to get revenge, an eye for an…

For example, Malcom X and James Brown both came from broken homes as well as struggled with poverty and dropping out of school. Consequently they each entered and spent years in the legal system at relatively young ages. On a positive note, the time they spent incarcerated allowed them to each find their passions and developed their knowledge and talents. Upon their respective releases they each quickly rose to the top and gained recognition for their unique talents. However, James Brown used his early life experiences to bring music with positive and empowering messages to African Americans. For instance, he wrote hits, which included “Don’t Be a Dropout” and “Say It Loud, I’m Black and I’m Proud”. Songs such as those were able to influence black culture, giving it anthems of pride and educational importance. On the other hand, Malcom X’s early experiences left him seeking retribution for the racial injustices inflicted upon the African American community at that time. During this time it’s hard to argue that Malcom X wasn’t justified on his stance regarding an eye for and eye punishment as a response to racism. However, his message of violence and aggression contradicted that of Dr. King and created somewhat of a divide within his community rather that bringing it together like James Brown did with his…

Instead the true motive behind the arrest was that he’s black and nothing more. This is one of the many things Dr. King did and a select few of those effect you in the world, others inspire us to follow in his example, and lastly under their leadership, Blacks, especially Dr. King, got everyone to work together for a common good.…
Being a colored man he had to go through his normal day life with people being scared and instantly coming to conclusion about who he was. He never got over it he just came to terms that people are always going to assume the worst if you are a black man. He tries to make himself seem less threatening to people around him. That would be the hardest thing to do. Imagine being a good person and instantly being judge by the color of your skin. He was a nice humble man from a small town now being characterized as a bad criminal.…
Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination is not so much in the physical act, but rather the legacy he left behind. African-Americans have mainly Dr. King to thank for their equal rights and growing power in society. As leader of the Civil Rights Movement, he worked tirelessly and gave his life for the cause, and his efforts were rewarded by the Civil Rights Act in 1964. His leadership began to transcend race; he gained the support of some whites with his charisma, determination, and convincing speeches. He also inspired new forms of peaceful protest, such as boycotts and marches, that are still used to fight for different rights today, specifically in the black community. They learned from him in the past and now take those lessons to continue fighting for true equality and transcending the race barrier. The assassination’s impact in modern day is that he is seen as a martyr, studied in schools across the country and famous for his heartfelt speeches that drove the movement for so long. There are always those “What if he had lived a full life? Where would civil and racial rights be if he lived for longer?” questions, to which there are no real answers. But that is what his legacy entails. The African-Americans continue to hope for the next Dr. King to lead them through the tough issues now in racist policing. But his impact is also a sense of hope: the African-American community has hope that, similar to how they gained racial equality after slavery…

Roger Williams writings in The Key into the Language of America reflected his nontraditional views of the Natives during his time. While most Englishmen in America viewed the Natives as “savages,… wild men,… barbarians,… or heathens,”(page 90) Williams “saw that the American Indians were no better or worse than the “rogues” who dealt with them, and that in fact they possessed a marked degree of civility.” (page89) The fact that he came to his conclusion by actually submerging himself into the Native American culture gives his perspective and idea more substance than those of the other Anglo-Americans who held their judgments without actually studying the culture.…
John Williams has composed over one-hundred film scores of which he has received forty-five Academy Award nominations. He has become a household name through his memorable music motifs. These themes capture the essence of the film and as one fan summarized:…
The war on drugs movement targets African Americans and incarcerates them for very minor crimes. Then there are laws like “stand your ground”. This law states that as long as the person that committed the crime claims that they felt threatened, even if the situation may not support that claim, then the whatever action they took to defend themselves is no longer considered a crime. The reason that this law is such a problem is because it is up to a judge and jury, which in many states will be predominately white, to decide whether the actions taken by the person that felt threatened were justified. White judges and juries are going to side with and not convict White people a lot more than they will African Americans. In the example given in the film it was a White man that killed an African American teenager. If the roles had been reversed, and it was an African American man that had killed a White teenager, the jury probably would have found the White man…
