The smell of molding laundry always filled the air at my cousin Rachel’s old Blue Island house. As we walked down the dark, narrow, creaking stairs, we all knew weren’t allowed down there but we somehow always stumbled down into the basement where my much older cousin Joey’s room and hang out was. He was rarely home when my sister Haley and I slept over, so all three of us would rummage through his things. We were always told not to even come close to touching his band equipment but we never really listened to that. We later found out about a man named Tony Lovato, my cousin’s semi-good friend with whom he jammed out with every once in a while. Many know of this man as the lead singer to the band Mest,

Throughout her multitude of works, author Flannery O’Connor employs the primary use a descriptive style of writing, with her works illustrating religion. Religion makes an appearance throughout her works, but for all the wrong reasons. Without context, religion is often seen as a positive, but under the hands of O’Connor, religion is depicted as being manipulated and used for crime. This can be visualized within her three works, “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” “The Life You Save May Be Your Own,” and “Good Country People,” as within those short stories, religion is introduced and used in a twisted manner. Although religion is a central component to her descriptive writing style, O’Connor also frequently utilizes as elements of that style, foreshadowing,…

"The average dog is a nicer person than the average person." This was said by Andy Rooney. Andy Rooney is a very, very wise man. He adopted a dog from an humane society once, just like I did. The animal shelter I got my dog from was called Humane Society Of West Michigan. The Humane Society Of West Michigan was very neat and orderly. It smelled like sanitizer and bleach mixed together. Past the main lobby there was a wide hallway you go through to get to the crowded room where they keep all the dogs. Inside this spacious room were kennels that had between 2 and 4 dogs in them. A couple of them only had 1 lonely dogs in them. This made me feel happy and sad being…

She is a beautiful young woman, perhaps the most beautiful woman he has ever seen. Her hair is a midnight black color; it almost reminded him of the color of the night sky as he looks through a window. As he looked at her hair he notice the way the light catches in it and it shimmers as it flows with her every move. His eyes are drawn to the fact that her hair is very lengthy reaching down to the middle of her torso, so long in fact that it almost caresses the small of her back. He remembered running a hand through her hair and it felt as though he was touching some of the finest silken fabric ever woven. Soft and almost liquid like, her hair seems to flow over his fingers like water as he touched it. He finds himself wanting to bury his face in her hair, as if to hide from the world and all the problems it holds for him on a daily basis. As he looked at, and touched her hair it seems to take grasp of his mind and deny him of any other thoughts about anything else going on around him. Her beautiful face is demanding of attention. Its high cheekbones calling his eyes to the statuesque bone structure underlying its gentleness. She has been graced with a look that could be that of royalty. Her tight, rose colored lips are pursed in what appears to be mid-kiss. The slight hints of moisture on her lips making them glisten in the light, causing them to look as though they are really a reflection on the waters of a pond and not really a part of her at all. They seem to call out to him, beckoning him to lean in and press his lips against hers. Her molten golden eyes staring back at him as though to pierce his very soul and derive his thoughts and feelings. He could see the different shades of gold streaking through her eyes, making them appear to be alive just as fire does when it moves and flickers. They appear to cast a spell on him causing him to neglect all else and freeze in a state of mystification. Her skin is creamy white, like the color of…

I push the door open. The bell rings, with a soft but shrill ring. A wave of rubber gloves and disinfectant masked with air freshener smells are in the air . Chairs are cluttered in the waiting room of the dentists. Clusters of magazines lie on the wood coffee tables, shiny bright plastic showing logos and slogans. A little way forward from where I stand is a desk. A smiling receptionist sits there. She seems to have been expecting someone somehow, as she points me to go wait near the couches and chairs.…

When the floodgates open and water pours down from the sky there is nothing to do other than hope and pray that you are prepared for the storm, and what better a place to go for supplies then a Wal-Mart. People rushed in and out pushing up against each other like a school of fish swimming in tight quarters. In my sweats and hoodie, I strolled in trying to avoid getting pushed over while I noted a sign that read “open late, get your supplies today”. I wandered a bit until I found the perfect, most inconspicuous spot to sit; an eyeglass kiosk located at about 30 feet from the 15 checkout lines. In the kiosk, there was a sole woman who wore a grey sweatshirt with a long white lab coat and white pants that set her apart from the customers. She had a very dark, black skin tone, and black curly hair.…

Drip drop, drip drop… the young blonde haired woman was slumped on the fresh, bottle green grass in her local park which was bleached in sunlight; she felt the sizzling summer heat as tiny droplets of sweat trickled down her face. She lazily turned her face upwards to see the fierce August sun glaring down at her from the cloudless sky. Urgently trying to find a way to avoid the scorching sun, her eyes locked onto a monstrous tress with its branches twisted like distorted limbs reaching out to her, welcoming her. So she pushed herself off the grass and scurried towards the unoccupied shade.…
