Tom Sawyer Chapters 25 - 35
Chapter 25 A strong desire to go somewhere and dig hidden treasure came to Tom. He went out to find Joe Harper but he failed. Next he sought out Ben Rogers but Ben had gone fishing. Fortunately, he stumbled upon Huck Finn the Red-Handed. Tom took Huck to a private place and told him the matter. Huck agreed so willingly. Huck asked Tom where they will dig out the treasure. Tom told him that robbers always hide it on islands or under dead trees that have one limb sticking out, or in haunted houses. Since they’ve been to Jackson’s Island, Tom told Huck that they might as well find a dead tree a few miles of civilization. They ventured out with a pick and shovel, their minds full of fantasies of what kind of treasure they could find. Huck decides that he’d use the treasure to have pie and a glass of soda every day and go to every circus that comes along. Tom said that he will buy a new drum, a “sure-‘nough sword”, and a red necktie and bull pup, and get married to a girl of his dreams. A small argument came up between them about Tom marrying a girl. By the end of the argument, they started digging around at in particular spots where the treasure might be hidden. A few hours or so, they found nothing. They thought that they weren’t digging the right spot so they chose a new spot and began again. They made some progress but with no such luck, they found nothing. Tom finally told Huck that they’ll tackle the old tree that’s over yonder on Cardiff Hill back of the widow’s. They argued that the widow might take away the treasure because the land belongs to her. But then, Tom said that it wouldn’t matter whose land it belongs to, the only thing that matters is whoever finds the treasure. And so, the work went on, but still, no treasure. Huck blames it on the interference of the witches and that is the trouble. Tom just told Huck that witches don’t have powers during the daytime. Until then, the two boys decided that they’ll just return in the evening to continue their

The first three chapters present this period in American history by showing us the life of a boy at the time, Tom Sawyer. From his adventures, Twain depicts that the education at the time was not as well enforced and as serious as it is today, which is shown by Tom not going to school, but instead, he went swimming. Furthermore, Twain depicts religion at the time to be a formal event, shown through the way Tom had to wash himself and dress for his Sunday school. In addition to this. Twain depicts that religious knowledge is something that the children should be rewarded for, to get the honor of a bible and a ceremony.…

And twice I went down the rod away in the night, and slipped around front, and see her setting there by her candle in the window with her eyes towards the road and the tears in them; and I wished I could do something for her but I couldn’t, only to swear that I wouldn’t never do nothing to grieve her any more. While Huck and Jim are on the river, they come across a sinking ship. Huck wants to go on the ship and steal from it, but Jim does not want to go near the ship because it is sinking. Huck says to Jim, “Do you reckon Tom Sawyer would ever go by this thing? Not for pie, he wouldn’t. He’d call it an adventure – that’s what he’d call it, and he’d land on that wreck if it was his last act” (Twain 67). Huck shows Tom is thrill-seeking by telling Jim this. Huck knows Tom would do anything for a good adventure. Tom would never pass up the opportunity to explore something and would always make the most of the escapade no matter how dangerous. Later in the novel, as Tom selfishly tries to help Huck save Jim, he comes up with many elaborate plans. Huck knows Tom’s plans are impractical, but Tom will not listen to him. When asked why he went through all the trouble to set Jim free when he already was, he replied with, “Well, that is a question, I must say; and just like women! Why I wanted the adventure of it; and I’d ‘a’ waded neck-deep in blood to” (Twain 289). Instead of telling everyone Jim is free like a practical person would, he leads Huck and Jim to believe the idea of breaking Jim out is extremely necessary. All he wants to do is go on adventures without a care in the world. Instead of thinking about others, he thinks about all the fun, adventurous things he could do as an alternative. Mark…
