Tom Brennan Speech.
How has the prescribed text you have studied conveyed how knowledge attitudes and beliefs of characters have been affected by the transition of going ‘Into the World’?
How would you and your family cope with a major tragedy? Would you be bitter, argue or cling together? And most importantly how would you even begin to move on with your life?
Throughout the book ‘The Story of Tom Brennan’, each character deals with the tragedy in many different ways. Tom becomes depressed and begins to blame himself, he rejects that Dan, his older brother, has committed a crime and is sent to jail, ‘didn’t they realise we weren’t like everyone else here?’ (Page 134). Kylie, Tom’s younger sister, become rebellious and felt that everyone in their new town, Coghill, would have found out their secret eventually and it wasn’t fair to keep it hidden. ‘That was the thing about my sister, she’d become tough, like I didn’t know her anymore.’ (Page 29). ‘In many ways she’d released me, pushing me into my own fear.’ (Page 190). ‘In some ways, part of me almost admired her guts’ (Page 185). Tess, Tom’s mum, is affected by it the most; she refuses to accept that it’s happened and feels that her son has been ripped away from her. ‘“Well Tess,’ Kath started, “I’m sorry about that, but my son can’t even turn his neck to see his back.”’ (Page 155). She begins to live in denial and won’t talk about it. ‘Come on girlie, don’t be so self indulgent. Life goes on.’ (Page 4). Daniel becomes depressed and realises the consequences of his actions. “He’d been absolutely ripped to shreds. He didn’t sleep, eat, hardly spoke, never smiled. The only thing he did was cry. He cried buckets.” (Page 121).
The journey of transitioning into the world began when they were forced to move away from their home in Mumbilli and had to live with their grandmother in Coghill. For all of them this became a massive hurdle that they had to overcome to transition successfully into the world. They had to

Burke skillfully employs how dialogue and conversation through transition can change attitudes. While Daniel is in the hospital with Fin and Tom, Burke illustrates that, “Daniel cried so hard, I thought my head was going to explode”, Burke creates characterisation by building the image of the character Tom through the use of hyperbole, “my head was going to explode”, demonstrates the emotional remorse that Tom portrayed. Burke employs this technique to highlight Daniel's brutal actions and how that impacted his transition. Tom states with the use of emotive language, “I watched my parents together on the table, One of the worst things was seeing the hurt and shame and fear in their faces”. Burke powerfully represents how Tom experiences his heartbroken parents and conveys a sense of strong emotional response to Daniel's consequences.…

Tom’s life is changed drastically when the car crashes. He has dug too deep into what he refers to as the ‘black hole’ and he loses the will to live: “Trying to shut down the bad thoughts that always surfaced and suffocated any hope I had of getting my life back.” (pg.15). He tries to get better by starting running as a way of releasing his stress and worry. Someone who was essential for Tom to move on was Daniel his brother: “‘Do you hate me, Tommy?’…. ‘Daniel.’ I swallowed. ‘You’re my brother.’(pg.141) Although Daniel has done such a horrible thing Tom is not willing to give up on his brother. Another character that helps Tom conquer his past is his Uncle Brendan. Brendan really gets Tom to open up and see the world from another point of view; this causes Tom to start talking: “You were hardly ‘Mr Have-a-Chat’ when you arrived. Now I can’t shut you up.” (pg198) He moved on from his past and found happiness in himself and his life again. He finds himself through his girlfriend Chrissy because when he’s with her all he is, is himself: “When I was with Chrissy I was me again. Simple Tom Brennan - no ties, no debt, no guilt, no bad thoughts. Just me, the way I had always known myself.” (pg.261). Although the road to happiness was hard for Tom, his desire to…

Deep into the novel, Mark retells the story of the ’Boy from Beirut’ to Joaquin and he explains how it was his fault that the boy is dead. As Joaquin and Mark explore the depths of this memory, Joaquin said “You never pass over them [our pains]. You carry them with you forever. That is what it means to live”(p.124). The ideology behind this is everyone must learn to live with the pain through their lives. This helps Mark to unlock the guilt that he is hiding away and that there is only one person that can only truly forgive him...himself. After this moment, Mark’s heart and mind are opened and he learns how to forgive himself for his actions that took place during that…

But what if I told you about The Rocky Horror Picture Show? A kooky tradition that has been around in here in Las Vegas for 14 years and known to the world for the past 42, that has brought unity and self expression to its audiences you too can be a part of.…

Dr. Myriam Sidibe promotes hand-washing with soap all over the country, organizing partnerships with communities, companies and much more. She is the only women in the world with a doctorate degree in public health, specializing in hand-washing. She is also a part of the Global Social Mission Director of LifeBuoy soap. I could tell she is very altruistic by the way she speaks of others. Dr. Sidibe has practiced intercultural empathy, and now for fourteen years she has traveled to fifty-five countries all over the world, working with thousands of children to get a better understanding of when soap is not used and how and when it should be used effectively. I am sure she has been through cultural shock along the way of visiting fifty-five countries. We take washing our hands with soap for granted most of the time. Four out of five people do not wash their hands after leaving the restroom. Diarrhea and Ammonia are the two top killers of children under the age of five. We could prevent that by simply washing our hands! In Dr. Myriam Sidibes’ speech, she talks about how soap reduces respiratory infection by 1/3rd. It reduces our chances of getting the Flu, Ebola, Cholera and much more. We could save the lives of thousands of babies if we just used soap. She said that if soap was used every time our hands were dirty, we could save 600,000 thousand children every year! Dr. Sidibe has been more than comforting in her speech and journey by saving thousands of lives and sharing her knowledge and ideas on how to make the world a healthier place.
