To Kill A Mockingbird
I. To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee published on July 11th, 1960. This novel takes place in Maycomb, Alabama. The main characters in this novel are Atticus Finch, Jem Finch, Scout Finch, Boo Radley, Dill Harris, Aunt Alexandra, Miss Maudie, Mr. Robert Ewell, Mayella Ewell, Tom Robinson, and Calpurnia. Each of these characters plays a significant role in this novel.
II. A character who is abused and mistreated in this novel is Arthur Radley also known as Boo Radley. Boo Radley has a brother and a father who also abuse him.
A. Boo Radley is mistreated by his family
1. Mr. Radley a.) locks him in the basement b.) doesn’t let him out the house
2. Nathan Radley a.) doesn’t allow Boo to put gifts in the knot hole for Jem and Scout B. Boo Radley is also mistreated by society
1. Scout and Jem a.) they invade his privacy by snooping around the Radley house. b.) they act out Boo Radley’s life by putting on “plays” c.) they play a prank on Boo
2. The townspeople a.) they believed he was dead b.) they thought everything that happened in the town was his fault or caused by him c.) they all gossiped about him
III. Tom Robinson is another mad treated badly by society A. Tom Robinson is mistreated by the people in town
a.) they dislike Tom because of his skin color
b.) they accuse him guilty during the trial even though he is not
c.) Tom is misjudged by everyone and isn’t given the opportunity to have a say in anything B. Tom Robinson is mistreated by Mayella Ewell
a.) Mayella accuses Tom of raping her
b.) Mayella lies about her father not abusing her which leads Tom to be guilty
c.) Mayella has feelings towards Tom and is upset that Tom Robinson gently put her down.
IV. Mrs. Merriweather and her social circle or club act like they are “caring” people but in all honesty they are fake and hypocrites and all they do is gossip. A. Mrs. Merriweather’s social club treats their workers badly.
a.) She always complains about her servants
b.) She is a very racist woman
V. To Kill A Mockingbird is a representation of humankind’s inhumanity toward humankind. People treat other humans poorly and that’s where we get conflict from. This novel is a great write by Harper Lee.

Mayella Ewell tries to appear as though she was taken advantage of by from Tom Robinson, when she was the true one at fault. Mayella approaches the stand, and, “She seemed somehow fragile-looking”, (Lee,179). Mayella attempts to get the jury on her side by looking like a young, broken girl, but she is used to working hard and can hold her own very well. The feelings and exhibited concern and empathy for other is too extreme. When defending Tom Robinson, during the court case he questions Mayella Ewell with courtesy and respect. Mayella is an uneducated girl whom Atticus believes is lying about being raped by Tom Robinson. Mayella is rude to Atticus saying "Won't answer a word you say long as you keep on mockin' me." (page 200). However Atticus remains calm and polite, never attempting to trick her. He addresses her as "miss" and his own daughter Scout "wondered if anybody had ever called her ma'am or 'Miss Mayella' in her life." (page 201).
