In the book To Kill A MockingbIrd we get introduced to the charter Atticus. one of the main characters. He's the father of two children Scout and Jem. He's a lawyer in the fictional town called Maycomb. He is a very respected man throughout the town everyone knows him and he knows everyone due to their small population. Atticus is given the job of defending a black man Atticus is a man full of respect throughout the story we discover more and more about his charter. He’s know to be the man to do the difficult jobs and him defending a black man is one of them. Due to tom robinson's skin color black vs white he’s already guilty no question asked what makes it worst is that he's being accused of raping a white lady. Many folks in Maycomb called Atticus and his kids names because they felt he was wrong defending a black man.“nigger-lover is just one of those terms that don't mean anything—like snot-nose. It's hard to explain—ignorant, trashy people use it when they think somebody's favoring Negroes over and above themselves” (#). Atticus knew the danger of him protecting a black man and going against his town morals but he wanted to show his kids the right way how to live their lives. And not to kick a man when their down aka blacks because they’re already at the bottom of the social class why keep pushing them down when they have nothing. To hold on to. This didn't settle too well with the jury they thought he was saying that he was better than them. Because he felt badly for a white girl, it was inferred that he was in a better position than she; this is a negative thing in racist society.Even though there was evidence proving his innocence, Tom had already lost the case, especially in that one statement. So to show Tom Robinson who is in charge and who has more power they decided he was guilty.
