Title: Kinetic Molecular Theory
Use the postulates of the kinetic theory to explain the following:

i)Matter can exist in three states

ii)The pressure exerted by a confined gas decreases as its temperature is lowered

iii)A gas of low molecular mass will diffuse through air faster than a gas of high molecular masseven though both are at same temperature.

The Kinetic Theory can be used to describe the three physical states of matter namely, solid, liquid and gas. In this theory, some basic assumptions has to be made:

a) all matter is made up of extremely small particles

b) these particles are in constant random motion

c) all collisions between these particles are elastic, and

d) mutual attractive forces exist between particles

The explanation below gives more information about the three states of matter:

i) solids

> particles are held together in a regular pattern by strong attractive

forces.

> particles vibrate about in fixed positions.

ii) liquids

> vibrating particles have sufficient energy to move from their

fixed positions to other parts within a liquid.

> liquids take the shape of their container.

iii) gases

> particles have sufficient kinetic energy to help escape the

attractive forces from other particles.

> gases take up the complete volume of a container.

The kinetic theory provides vital information on the sciences we learn. An example of this is the topic on "heating and cooling" in physics. Besides, the kinetic energy theory may also be used in application to many other things, one of which is in relation to gas laws.

Pressure is explained by the Kinetic Theory as arising from the force exerted by collision of gas molecules with the walls of the container.

An experiment was conducted by a French scientist, Jacques Charles to see the effect of temperature on the pressure of a gas being confined in a container. It was found that when the temperature went down, the pressure also went down and vice-versa with the temperature going up. The kinetic theory explains that

The purpose of this lab is to learn how to write law expressions, determine orders by graphs, and calculate rate constants. By determining the number of drops of sodium hypochlorite necessary to make a diluted food dye change to colorless in less than three minutes helps calculate the absorbance which can then be analyzed to find the pseudo rate constant and eventually leading to the rate constant and the rate law. The results show that the m and n are both 1st order which makes the overall order of the blue dye 2nd order.…

In order to compare the two reactors used in our experiment, a simplified global kinetic model was used to describe the DRM reaction behavior in different plasma reactor. This model was already used by authors in the field of pollutant removal by using a plasma reactor [15, 21–23]. It is generally accepted that free radical processes are the main mechanisms in non-equilibrium plasma reaction [21, 24-25].…

Charles’s Law (also known as the law of volumes) is an experimental gas law which describes how gases tend to expand when heated. At constant pressure, the volume of a given mass of an ideal gas increases or decreases by the same factor as its temperature on the absolute temperature scale. It can be written as V∞T where V is the volume or the gas and T is the absolute temperature.…

In the “Crush the Can” lab, we took an aluminum can, heated up some water in it, and turned it upside down into a tub of ice-cold water, crushing it with pressure. The movement of gas particles was a crucial component of this experiment. After the can was placed onto the hot plate, as the water heated up, the gas particles inside of the can started to move faster due to the relationship between temperature and the average kinetic energy, or average motion energy, of the gas particles. As the temperature increased, so did the speed of the particles inside of the can. Particles of water obtained sufficient energy to turn into water vapor, and the particles of water vapor displaced the original air inside of the can. As the number of elastic collisions…

The stoichiometry of the reaction will affect the pressure change on the reaction.1 Just like the other conditions Le Chatelier’s Principle states the equilibrium point will move to stabilize the change in pressure. The cause of pressure is from gas molecules hitting the sides of their container, so proportionally the more molecules in the container the higher the pressure is. If the pressure is increased the reaction will move toward the side with fewer molecules and if the pressure is decreased the reaction will produce more molecules to make the pressure increase again.2…

The first kinetic theory or gases states that under ideal conditions the volume is negligible; The particles are so small compared to the spaces between them that they essentially have no volume. According to Avogadro’s law, under the same temperature and pressure, any gases with the same volume also have the same amount of moles. Avogadro’s number is 6.02 X 10^23 and it represents the amount of particles in a mole. If every mole of any gas contains the same number of particles and the volume of all those particles is negligible then it can be said that no matter what the gas the same quantity of moles with occupy the same volume.…
