When I finished reading the book “Escape from Camp 14” by Blaine Harden, I realized that there were so many serious problems we should have known about the circumstance of the North Korea. It was actually much more horrible than I expected. What I have seen through this book was not only Shin’s awful situation but also the tragic relationship between Shin and his parents because of hunger, education and dehumanization.
Actually, there was no choice for Shin but to have that tragic relationship with his parents. Who is able to live a normal life without meeting basic human needs? In Camp 14, there was literally nothing to eat. Because of the severe hunger, there was no sharing or consideration at all. Shin’s mother always beat him whenever he had eaten her food, and he also viewed her just as a competitor for food. For them, the happiest moment was when they were full by catching rats, but it was not even a regular occurrence. They were desperately hungry and scrawny, so betrayal and snitching each other for food was very common even among family. Security in camp always taught the children that the reason why they were in here was because of their parent’s filthy blood and this made the children hate and distrust their parents. Dehumanization was also a huge problem in the camp 14. Children could not even have a chance to feel affection and they did not even know what the love was. As long as people were living inside the camp, people neither knew love and mercy nor realized the notion of family. Kids especially were just doing what they only saw and learned, which was the most abusive things. Obliteration of the human right was extremely harsh in there and it turned people into extremely immoral human beings as Shin betrayed his mother and brother. I think dehumanization might be the absolute reason why Shin was furious about his mom and had blamed her for a long time even though she was the person who gave birth to him.

A term has been coined to describe the regime in North Korea is ubuesque. The word means grotesque and bloody. If The Aquariums of Pyongyang is anything to go by, the word is well-coined. What is more grotesque and bloody than making concent-ration camp detainees,some as young as 15, watch and participate in frequent executions? Or young children being brutalized by “teachers” in what passes for “school” at the camp.
