This lab focused on the examination and identification of tissues that make up the organs of the body. The tissues are divided into four main categories: epithelial, connective, muscle, and neuronal. Click on the thumbnail images to see a larger version. All of the photomicrographs were taken using the 40X objective (400X magnification), which is the highest magnification we use in this lab.

Remember, for the practical, you are expected to:
1) Identify the tissues
2) Know where the tissues are found
3) Know one function for the tissues Epithelial tissue | | Simple squamous epithelium Epithelial tissue that lines the air pockets (alveoli) of the lungs. | | Stratified squamous epithelium The identification is from the shape of the top layer of cells. | | Simple cuboidal epithelium This tissue lines the tubules of the kidney. You can see the lumen (open area) and the single layer of cuboidal cells that enclose a tubule. The cells are cuboidal in shape with the nucleus in the center. | | Simple columnar epithelium This tissue lines the digestive tract. The light fuzz on the apical surface of the cells are microvilli that increase the absorptive area of the cell. The light purple structures are goblet cells, which are unicellular glands that secrete mucous. | | Pseudostratified epithelium
This tissue lines the trachea. On the apical surface are cilia that are used to move mucous along the surface of the trachea. The cells vary in shape but there is only one layer of cells attached to the basement membrane. The shorter cells mixed with columnar cells give this epithelium the appearance of being made up of layers of cells. | | Transitional Epithelium This tissue lines the bladder. The cells are stratified and are capable of changing their shape to accommodate the stretching of the bladder. |

    One of the biggest groups is the epithelial tissues. There are several different kinds of epithelial tissue cells and they all have different structures. Epithelial tissues are divided into simple and stratified tissue cells. Simple tissue cells are cells that are in a single layer while stratified cells have multiple layers making the tissues thick. Then there are three kinds of specific shapes these cells can have: squamous, cuboidal and columnar. Squamous cells are square shaped and flattened. Cuboidal cells are cube-shaped while columnar cells are elongated and rectangular. Therefore, all of the epithelial tissues are simple squamous, simple cuboidal, simple columnar, stratified squamous, stratified cuboidal and stratified columnar but that’s not all! Another kind of epithelial tissue cell is known as pseudo-stratified columnar which appears to have layers but really doesn’t. There is also transitional epithelial and its shape changes depending on increased and decreased tension.…

    There are four different types of tissue. They are; nerve, epithelial, connective, and muscle. The nerve tissue is made up of neurons that receive and transmit electrical impulses, this is their function. There are several different types of epithelial tissue. First there is simple squamous epithelium tissue. This is a single layer of cells that is in the lining of blood vessels, the lining of the pulmonary alveoli, and the Bowman’s capsule in the kidneys. The function of this tissue is to separate blood from the fluid in tissues and to separate air from fluids in tissues and to filter substances from blood to form urine. The next type of epithelial tissue is stratified squamous epithelium. This is a tissue composed of two or more layers and the cells tend to be cuboidal. This type of tissue is found in the epidermis of the skin and the linings of the mouth, pharynx, esophagus and anus. The function of this tissue is to protect and secrete. Transitional epithelium is the next type of tissue and it varies in shape from cuboidal to squamous. It is located in the linings of the urinary bladder and other hollow structures. Its function is to allow stretching to expand the organ that it is in. The next type is simple cuboidal epithelium. It is cuboidal cells that are in glands and parts of the kidney tubule and outer covering of ovaries. The function of this tissue type is secretion. Simple columnar epithelium is next and it is in the lining of the digestive tract and in ducts of many glands. Its function is to secrete and absorb from the stomach to the anus. Ciliated simple columnar epithelium is in the linings of the bronchi of the lungs, nasal cavity and oviducts. Its function is to secrete, absorb and propel fluids and particles. Then there is stratified columnar epithelium and it is in the linings of the epiglottis, pharynx, anus and male urethra. Its function is protection.…
