Dear Jack and Jill, My advice to you for a successful and everlasting relationship is good communication. Without good communication the relationship/engagement will not develop to the next level of marriage. In the beginning your communication was limited to conversations of neutral agreements because of the initial stage of your relationship. Researchers have found that one of the reasons a new relationship is usually so pleasant and friendly is that people emphasize the similarities they have and ignore the differences (Brown & Rogers, 1991). As your relation blossoms the differences in both of you will surface. Some maybe too minute to entertain, and can be easily overlooked or digested. Constant differences amongst partners that are everyday habits can be discussed and settle without harming the relationship. Disregarding or overlooking major concerns such as, financial matters, sexual preferences, and raising of children can be harmful to the relationship if not handle properly. Counseling may be recommended or advisable in most cases. Every relationship is different, no two relationship are the same. As the relationship unfolds and you both begin to know each other better, you will begin to release information to the other which was somewhat private at the start of the relationship. The most important characteristic of a deep interpersonal relationship is the self-disclosure of our innermost thoughts and feelings (Roeckelein, 1998). When you both begin to exchange personal information, building trust and confidence that is a sign that the relationship is progressing. As the relationship progresses you will be more incline to disclose more of your identity. Self Disclosure is sometime give-and-take, where both parties have equal risk when disclosing personal information. Shared disclosures will increase the vulnerability to being hurt or

    ABSTRACT For decades, there has been an immense misrepresentation of women in media. The women that are seen in magazines, on TV and on the big screen are, for the most part, unusually tall, slender and flawless. Talent agents are forever pushing their clients to lose weight, stressing that if they dont, they wont be taken seriously in the entertainment and modeling industries. INTRODUCTION In todays world, it is almost never that we see an average American woman represented in the Mass Media as a beauty ideal. In the 1950s, women looked up to famous figures like curvy-figured actress, Sophia Loren. In the 1960s, women looked up to such icons as Marilyn Monroe, who wore a size fourteen. Today, a size zero is depicted as the norm. This years winner of Americas Next Top Model was 19 year-old Ann Ward, who is 62 and has a waist so small that two human hands fit around it (Yes, it was done on an episode). The problem with this depiction is that it is widely unattainable and unrealistic. Still, females from teens to women older in age, turn to images in advertisements to define how they should look. This growing trend that the media fosters is very harmful to a womans self- image, as well as to her self-esteem and to her sound mental state.     In some instances upward social comparisons can result in a contrast effect such that following comparisons with a model, one would experience an increase in BD (see Myers & Crowther, 2009). On the other hand, upward social comparisons can results in an assimilation effect on self-evaluation such that after comparison to a model one would experience a decrease in BD (see Nikkelen et al., 2012). In the first session, participants’ visual attention to nine male body parts was examined using eye-tracking. In the second session, participants watched a nonemotional documentary interrupted by either neutral commercials or commercials containing highly idealized muscular men (2012 Psychology of Men & Masculinity). Reading into this research study certain results were eye-opening, how men actually feel so insecure if they do not have the ‘ideal male’ image. Simple looking at a person to see if they are their reaching point, most of the time it is easily seen that someone ‘juices’ themselves up; they are content with people around them knowing they are on steroids even though it’s the easy way out, compared to working out naturally. The study is highly affected and the results were easily able to understand, visual attention and related preoccupations are difficult to measure using self reports (Lamme, 2003). Moreover, especially in men such measures may be prone to socially desirable responding; men may be ashamed to report that they compare their own body with that of other men, because this may be regarded as feminine (and thus nonmasculine) behavior.
