The Times of India is one of the widest circulated newspapers of India which has been serving the nation since 1838. The Times of India belongs to the Times Group, which is headed by Bennett, Coleman & Co. Ltd. is the largest media services conglomerate in India. The Times of India newspaper is headed by Vineet and Samir Jain. The Times Of India also known as TOI is one of India's leading English daily newspapers. TOI group has 45 dailies and periodicals in 3 languages and 108 editions from 11 centres across the country and a combined readership of over 75 lakhs.
HISTORY
The newspaper was founded on November 3, 1838 as The Bombay Times and Journal of Commerce during the British Raj. It was founded by Raobahadur Narayan Dinanath Velkar. The Bombay Times and Journal of Commerce was launched as a bi-weekly edition, was published every Wednesday and Saturday. With increasing popularity, in the year 1850, “The Bombay Times and Journal of Commerce” was turned into a daily newspaper from the earlier bi-weekly.
In 1859, Robert Knight merged “The Bombay Times and Journal of Commerce” with two more popular newspapers – “Bombay Standard” and “Chronicle of Western India” and founded “Bombay Times and Standard”. In 1861, Knight merged “Bombay Times and Standard” with “Bombay Telegraph & Courier” and renamed it to what the publication is called even today – “The Times of India”. The “The Times of India” was circulated in India and Europe and by the beginning of 20th century it employed as many as 800 odd people.

    ITC was incorporated on August 24, 1910 under the name of 'Imperial Tobacco Company of India Limited'. Its beginnings were humble. A leased office on Radha Bazar Lane, Kolkata, was the centre of the Company's existence.     In order to dominate, one must first to gain the rights to conquer. If one wanted to be a competitor of the current imperialistic power, it must first defeat the imperialistic power. This is the case for the British East India Company. Before its establishment, the company faces many strong powers such as the Portuguese, Spaniards, and Dutch. In 1588, Spanish Armada were defeated, British were able to enter this competitive field in order to start their quest in exploring and colonizing the international markets. This marked the start of the British East India Company. Initially, the doubtful Queen Elizabeth did not approve of this venture for the British, but after the defeat of Spanish Armada, she became more confident. As a result, on the last day of the year 1600, she granted a charter incorporating 217 subscribers under the name of “The Governor and Company of Merchants of London trading into the East Indies”. This company was also known as the British or the English East India Company. This provided the company with an exclude trade with India for fifteen years. The first governor and the twenty-four committees were nominated that year, and afterward, these positions were elected annually. This company was also the first limited liability corporation, and it began with 125 shareholders and £72,000 of capital.     Sir Pherozeshah Mehta was born in Bombay, on August 4, 1845, where he spent the greater part of his life. His father, Merwanji Mehta, belonged to a family of merchants. Pherozeshah entered the Lincoln's Inn in 1864 and spent three years qualifying himself. Called to the Bar in 1868, he left for home in September 1868. While in England, he used to frequent the house of Dadabhai Naoroji, and these visits were to remain important influences in moulding his liberal outlook. Several of his close friends were liberals; besides Telang and Badruddin Tyabji (who along with Pherozeshah were described as "the three bright boys of Bombay"), Ranade, Gokhale, Wacha, W. C. Bonnerjee and Bal Mohan Wagle were close to Pherozeshah. This made him a part of the Liberal School of Indian politics. His antipathy to violent methods in politics alienated him from Tilak and Pal, his innate trust in constitutionalism, his dislike of regional and communal developments, made him criticise Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. These were characteristics that distinguished the Liberal School in Indian politics. Education, both primary and higher, absorbed his interests throughout his life. He saw in education the means by which India could modernize itself rapidly; he laid great emphasis on the value of English. He had a hand in the establishment of a Swadeshi bank, the Central Bank of India. Pherozeshah is remembered mainly as the maker of the modern Bombay Municipal Corporation which he fostered and served in a distinguished manner for nearly half a century. He was mainly responsible for the founding of an English newspaper, the Bombay Chronicle (April 1913), which became an important agency for expressing Indian public opinion.
