Time Management for the Adult Online Student

In todays busy world pursuing a degree by attending classes online has become a very popular alternative to campus classes. Time management becomes a critical tool for busy students. Learning skills to help organize everyday activities becomes a necessity. For non-traditional students, online learning is convenient and flexible. A common myth is that getting an online degree is easier because you can work at your own pace; however, online learning requires a tremendous amount of commitment and time management. Juggling everyday life and attending online classes can prove to be nearly impossible.

Learning skills for time management is critical for the online student. Daily distractions of a full time job, family, and children can make getting an online degree frustrating. A need for flexibility is one factor fueling the growth in online education—online enrollment hit an all-time high in 2010 with more than 6.1 million students—but a lack of direct oversight can make it easy for them to fall behind. (Sheehy, 2012) Using some simple time management skills can give the student the ability to complete tasks without feeling overwhelmed.

Recently, I have joined the ranks of adult online students, and have adopted many new time management skills. The transition has been exciting and eye opening. It is a completely different experience then the typical college classes I am used to. I have to be very disciplined with my schedule because I find it is very easy to get distracted when trying to study at home. Before deciding to return to college I sat down and took a good look at my life and asked myself

Since that destination was reached, ordinary people are trying to conquer what was once beyond their reach. Recent studies have shown that as online course enrollment increases, issues with assignment completion, lower quality work, and dropout rates have risen. There are many challenges to online study; however, time management, course load and prioritizing are the three main areas that should be focused on. First, determining how much time to spend on a subject is very troublesome. Depending on the subjects, some people like to spend extra time on certain things like math. Finding the time to spend with the family is stressful as well. There will always be something to distract one from their work. Next, course load will determine a lot of things, such as how much time will be needed for each subject, when assignments are due and when to take tests or quizzes. All of the things aforementioned need to be completed in a certain order and in a timely manner. Following a strenuous schedule will keep one on track. Finally, prioritizing will streamline things tremendously. Prioritize by determining how many assignments are due weekly for each subject, and if there are any tests. As well as, the difficulty of the subjects, and what impact they have on our daily life. In addition, many times we will overload ourselves and will need a momentary break. Though breaks should be short, but long enough so one can grasp the reigns tightly again and continue with what one is doing. Staying focused on the work at hand is hard to do when there are other obligations demanding attention as well. Doing the best in each subject, and staying diligent is the single most important thing. In closing, all of these things should be considered before starting an online course. Regret and failure will be less if one can get a good understanding of what is expected from them and focus on time management, course load and…

An online student does not travel as often as traditional student for course related purpose (OR5000-Graduate Student Orientation, p.4). Therefore, people tend to think an online student has a plenty of available time. But being a working student, the time I have for learning and working is limited, and as the time pass on, the pressure becomes more and more heavier each day. An online degree offers the opportunity for accredited higher education to individuals such as adults with hectic working lives since it serves as a form of convenience for a supplementary education. This is because course documents could be accessed easily on the Internet which would enable learning at their leisure despite busy schedules or the hassle of commuting to school. For example, in the U.S., a working mother, Janice Barnwell chose an online university to advance her career by obtaining a master 's degree in business and also, “two million students, most older than the traditional 18-22 year-old undergraduates, take all their courses online and two million more take one or more online course.” Given that study materials would be archived and saved on websites, they are easily available online for re-reading and revision. Students are turning to online courses for several reasons from scheduling conflicts with their work place to the distance the student lives from the college or university. There have been several researches and studies done to show why students are turning to online classes. In an article written in 2002 by Dutton, Dutton and Perry they “found out that flexibility in setting pace and time for studying is rated more important to online students than to lecture students”. This will help the students maintain a work, life and school balance. It gives them to freedom to work at their own pace or when their schedule allows. In the Article “Pros and Cons of online education for educators and Students, by Sara Nagel, Balasundram Maniam and Hadley Leavell” it is discussed that “Students who are trying to live a greener or more frugal lifestyle may find online education the way to go.” “Without the need to travel, students can save money on gas and have decreased wear and tear on their vehicle” “which translates to lower carbon emissions (Cristina, Florentina, Beatrice, & Cezar,2009).”…

I’ve thought about what my strengths and weaknesses are when it comes to online learning. One of my strengths has to be my dedication, when I really want something I dedicate my self and when there is something I truly care about I will do anything in my power to make it work. So knowing that I really want to get my degree and truly care about it I know that my dedication and drive will be my greatest strengths. Of course there are always weaknesses, one of them I believe was my time management. I have two kids, who are my life and take a lot of my time. Since starting orientation I have practiced setting aside my study time and really have done a great job in doing so. As long as I can keep a great schedule I will do fine in the time management area. Another weakness would have to be the online library, which will be a simpler weakness to overcome being that I have unlimited access to it and will spend much time getting used to it.…

Learners can process material at any time from any place (Paechter & Maier, 2010:296, citied by Artino & Stephens, 2009; Narciss et al, 2007). For students who cannot afford to take away from their time-dependent jobs, online programs provide flexibility in time and pace of study so that they are able to work meanwhile maintaining the universities’ academic commitment (Sharpe & Benfield, 2005; Conrad & Donaldson, 2004; Kruger-Ross & Waters, 2013). Moreover, by accessing a learning management system such as Moodle, Blackboard, course website, students can achieve clarity about their course information like assignments, test dates to the full extent (Kruger-Ross & Waters, 2013:181). On the other hand, online learning could be time-consuming…
