Tim O Brien's The Things They Carry
Tim O’Brien wrote The Things They Carry, an emotional story about soldiers leaving home to fight in the Vietnam War and the items they carried with them. O’Brien begins his story, when soldiers go into combat and overseas to serve our country include military issue equipment as well as personal items, which hold memories of fear or emotional value. O’Brien shows readers the weight soldiers carry while serving in the military. The love for family and country are important and how memories can be carried to aid in relieving stress of the battle. The story conveys physical, mental and emotional strain that soldiers must endure during times of war. The reader is asked to consider each and every aspect of war and what soldiers leave behind them as they go overseas. The Items They Carried, talks about items issued to them by the military and the personnel items they carry. The story began with Lieutenant Jimmy Cross, who carries with him letters and photographs of Martha, a college student in New Jersey. Throughout the story, Lt. Cross carries her letters and photographs signifying a bond and love her has for Martha. Lt. Cross is constantly daydreaming and …show more content…
Military personnel fighting for our country and swear to protect the citizens of the United States carry a heavy burden. Everyone has an items or two that they carry for emotional reasons, a picture of our children in our wallets, a key chain that has sentimental meaning to just the thought of family or friends to help use manage our day. Tim O’Brien short story can carry over to everyone lives. His metaphors show physical, mental and emotional impacts items had on his characters and forces the reader to take a glimpse into the readers own lives.     Tim O’Brien constructs a meticulous narrative in order to portray a true representation of war through his writing. It is well known however that truth always becomes a casualty through war resulting in a challenging approach for O’Brien. Although deemed a work of fiction, many of the stories within The Things They Carried reflect an almost autobiographical outlook through the characters combined with metafiction. O’Brien does well to create a distinction between the truth of the narrative and that of the truth of the events taking place.
