Ons as normale mense, wat nie altyd kan glo dat daar iets soos neerslagtigheid bestaannie, ervaar gewone dae, waarin ons gewoonweg aan ons dagtake werk.

Tog kry ons ook dae wat ons uiters goed voel, en is die lewe vir ons `n fees.

Daars min mense wat nie kan saampraat oor neerslagtigheid nie. Daardie gevoel wat jou beetkry as jy ‘n toets dop waarvoor jy hard geleer het, of wanneer jy ‘n geliefde verloor, of wanneer jy jou plek in die sportspan moet afstaan.

Nou kan ons maar erken dat daar ook dae is wat ons soms af voel. Tye wanneer jy nie lus is vir gesels nie, wanneer jy niks wil doen nie. Ons noem dit jou “donker” dae ….. Wanneer die swaarmoedigheid swaar op jou skouers druk. Sulke gevoelens word as normaal beskou.

Somtyds kan die dae uitstrek tot weke. Wanneer hierdie donker dae aanhou, word dit depressie genoem.

Dit beïnvloed persone van alle ouderdomme, insluitende kleuters, maar dit is huidiglik besig om te vermeerder onder tieners en jong mense.

Tiener selfmoord is die tweede hoogste rede vir sterftes onder tiener, naas motor ongelukke. 40% van tieners wat selfmoord pleeg kom uit gelukkige huise, en het geen probleme met hul ouers, onderwysers of maats gehad nie.

Omdat tieners se emosies so vreeslik baie verander van een oomblik na ‘n ander, is dit moeilik om depressie werklik te onderskei, aangesien tieners depressie kan wys op maniere waarop die ouers dit nie kan verwag nie.

Vir ‘n aantal persone is daar nie ‘n verskil tussen normale en abnormale depressie nie. Tog het navorsing bewys dat daar ‘n hemelsbreë verskil is.

Die belangrikste kenmerke van depressie is die gevoel van neerslagtigheid. Hierdie gevoel kan wissel van ‘n ligte gevoel van neerslagtigheid tot ‘n gevoel van totale hopeloosheid, wanhoop en eensaamheid. By die geval van abnormale depressie het die tiener ‘n gevoel dat alles verlore is, en dat niemand hulle meer kan help nie. Hierdie gevoel klaar nie op by aanhoor van goeie nuus, of
