Thomas Edison's Impact On Society
Thomas Edison is known as one of the greatest inventors of his time. As a young boy, no one ever taught him anything; he taught himself. He wouldn’t give up even when the task seemed impossible. He introduced many important inventions to the world that impact us in our everyday lives. In 1877 Edison filed a patent for the phonograph, his most original invention (Josephson 164). The phonograph had many uses including letter writing, playing music, telling time, and educational purposes; it was originally meant to be used for business purposes, but eventually, became common in entertainment halls and amusement centers. Thomas Edison did not invent the electric light bulb, but he made the first commercial one by testing different metal filaments, until he discovered a carbon-based, high-resistance, filament. Throughout his career, he made many valuable improvements to his invention. By making light bulbs cheap, safe, and convenient to the public, Edison changed the way we utilized light forever. Everyday we use light bulbs without realizing it, in our houses, in cities, in cars. It would be hard to imagine life without Edison’s light bulb.
While the phonograph and the light bulb were his main inventions, over the course of his life, Thomas Edison made other significant contributions to society. It is noted that Thomas Edison had 1,093 patents total (“List of Edison Patents”), having more patents than any other inventor. Throughout Edison’s career there is a stable flow of ideas and notions for modern products. Edison is the symbol of creativity and bright ideas, he is the definition of progress and motivation (“Edison Patents”). As a result, Thomas Edison has revolutionized the world with his inventions and made a positive contribution to our day-to-day lives.
