Thirst And Hunger In The Bible
What do you want? What do you long to have, in your life?

Well, it’s a profound question that’s not so easily answered. In fact the answer could change by the week, day, hour, minute, it can change, and does change all the time.

The Bible uses more poetic terms…
Anyone know what the bible calls it when we really want something? hunger and thirst
SO what do we hunger and thirst for? What do we long for?

What do you all hunger and thirst for?
Food, money, new clothes, cars, full tank of gas.
Boyfriend, girlfriend…satisfaction

I think we all just want satisfaction in our lives…am I right? And we see these things as a means to that end…if I could only have that car, I would be happy…If I could just have that guy as a boyfriend

By Jewish law, pigs were unclean animals…and he was not only working with them, but he longed to eat out of their trough. He had hit the bottom. And the bottom, is both a horrible and wonderful place to be…things tend to become clear from the bottom…
This may sound terrible but I’ve prayed for people to hit bottom…that kinda sounds mean, but from the bottom, you come to realize that…“wow, this thing hasn’t satisfied me, it hasn’t filled me…this thing can’t, it won’t, it never will…there has got to be more.” And some people have to hit bottom to realize that…

I love the next vs. in Luke
17“When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired men have food to spare, and here I am starving to death!

When he came to his senses…if he never would’ve hit the bottom, it is possible that he would have never come to his senses…

Where am I going with this…I don’t know, only that he was not satisfied…

How many of you have Ecclesiastes?
Solomon the richest, wisest king is on a quest for purpose, for satisfaction…he tried money, and ambition, and women, and building things, and drunkenness, and all these things, and came to the conclusion,

You get it…I think I’ve beat this horse enough, we will just never be satisfied, if we look for fulfillment in the things of this world…but that doesn’t mean we can never be satisfied…

Lets never forget that infinite joy is offered to us…we can be fulfilled…we can be satisfied…

Jesus said
Matt 5:6
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be? filled

One more thing…
All these that we try to find happiness in, all these things take a lot of work…you’ve gotta work to get money, work to get that car, or be in that relationship, or buy those new shoes…we spend a lot of money and a lot of time on the things that never satisfy…but…well this is how Isaiah put it…
Isaiah 55:1-2
1 “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost.
2 Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is

God seeing Solomon new found of love said to him, “Forasmuch as this is done of thee, and thou hast not kept my covenant and my statutes, which I have commanded thee, I will surely rend the kingdom from thee, and will give it to thy servant.” (APA, KJV, 1 Kings 11:11) Before the sins of Solomon, he was obedient and God granted him wisdom to rule the people of Israel. God gave Solomon more than he asked for; he gave him riches and honor. With the newfound wisdom, he was able to build a temple in Jerusalem. His pride slowly overtook his growth in the Lord. Solomon ended up relying on his riches than the wisdom God had anointed on him, leading him to engage in ungodly activities. His disobedience leads to the weak monarchy in Israel resulting in the Kingdom being dived into a North and a South…

Well since we are generalizing humans I will do so as well, obviously at the individual level things are completely different but generally, this is my stance on the insatiability of human wants. We as humans obviously from way back when have always wanted more. More food, more water, more money; it is just how we have become as a species. The same with bigger buildings, more sophisticated cars, if anything technology would be great for this. Compared to lets say our technology during the space race, we have a come an extraordinarily long way as a species from that point in time. If we were to ever stop this wanting so to speak then we would be contempt with ourselves and wouldn’t stride for anything more. This just isn't who we are. I don't…

“We people”(2) who are never satisfied with our own goals and achievements are the ones that sit “on the pavement”(2) wasting our time . People should always be thankful for what they have and what they have accomplished. They should never whish to be in other peoples’ palace because what they have now may be what God knows to be the best for them. Everyone always makes the mistake of wishing they could be that other person just because of the first impression that another person presents…

Josef Pieper does an invigorating job defining how Happiness comprehends a variety of meanings with divine life and achieving ultimate beatitude by putting an emphasis on how contemplation is the driving force to happiness. “Man’s ultimate happiness consists in contemplation” (Pieper 13). It is human nature to want more, more of what we like and to have better than what we have. This desire is not just for ourselves but for our children and the people we care about. It is in these desires that we can find the source of our suffering. We crave for the formation of states or realms of being that are not currently happening.…

The teacher of Ecclesiastes looks back at his own life and shares all that he tried to find satisfaction in. From property, women, wealth to wisdom and philosophy he gave himself whatever his heart desired. However, he realized that all pleasures are meaningless. It was just a temporary distraction. Everything is left behind at death. Same goes for wisdom and knowledge, what's the point of working hard and being wise when the intelligent and ignorant both share the same destiny. Just like the foolish, the wise man too will age and soon be forgotten. Whereas in wealth, its pointless to possess them as well, because after we die, our possessions are to be passed to others. Therefore, being rich or striving to be rich is a waste of time and effort. All these possessions mean nothing in the end, because they will be passed down, as that is the continuous cycle of life and death.…

In life we are too involved in materialistic things, and they don't satisfy us. The loving relationships we have, the universe around us: we take these things for granted and don’t really realize what matters the most. It’s a belief that comfort, pleasure, and wealth are the most desirable things in life, but that belief is very wrong and misunderstood. We are only on earth for a short time and materialistic items are worldly desires. Materialistic items may seem to fill in parts of you that may be missing but its only temporary, it’s not forever.…

In our everyday life, we experience many challenges, problems, and trials in which we sometimes find ourselves hopeless or give up from all iniquities. Frankly, we forget to see the clearer view of things around us. We forget to think about the wonderful things the world we presently live. We see enormous trees, gigantic mountains, overflowing rivers, and so much more. How can we forget about these things? Did you ever ask where do all these come from? Perhaps you have. Everything that is good in our life is a gift from our loving Heavenly Father. Whenever we pick something in our pocket is a blessing, the air we breathe, the water we drink, the earth we live in, the sun that gives light, everything around us is for free. Every single aspect of blessing we get from our daily lives is a gift from God. Truly, He did not forget each one of us; He loves us more than we know. How can we give back all these things? How can we show our gratitude to Him? When we contribute something for Him in return, we express our love, faith, and gratitude. If we become…
