Thinking in My First Language When I Write in English

English is an international language that people officially use all around the world. I have graduated from Sinjil high school in Palestine in 2009. I have decided to go back to the United States to study. It was hard for me to move to a new country after living twelve years in Palestine. My brother mentioned me to enroll in the Intensive English Language Program at University of New Orleans, that’s where he used to study. I agreed him and enrolled in this program. There was a placement test in the first day of school to choose the levels for students. I did a good job in my Grammar, listening, and reading, but bad in writing. It was my first time writing a paragraph or a sentence in English that day. I had placed in level three in writing and grammar, and level four in listening and reading.
The next day was my first day of classes, I was so afraid of being in class and answering questions I didn’t understand about myself. That was the hardest day for me in the United States. I have started feeling normal after few classes in school. My teacher for writing and grammar was a wonderful teacher; she helped me a lot in my whole essays. I had an “F” in my first essay, grammar mistakes took the first place in my essay, and thinking in my first language was the second problem in the essay. When I used to write in Arabic in high school, the teacher used to focus on the general topics without caring about any details, It was like fast-writing in English. I started getting better every other essay I wrote by the help of my teacher and the practice everyday. My practices helped me a lot to be more detailed in the body paragraphs and sentences.

This class has taught me many things about myself along with many necessary skills needed while writing. I know now that, through hard work and determination, I can achieve what I might think to be impossible. While reflecting back on my initial writing abilities, I see the weak, uneducated style of writing. Each essay shows my progression and improvement, and, after a while, the class began to become much easier. Today, after practicing throughout my essays this semester, I believe that I, in fact, have…

Secondly, I have chosen three items, namely, cause, contrast and argument paragraph. Those are three topics that I have written the most recently. They can show my improvements in writing paragraph skills. In these items, I want to improve many things such as ways of using comma splice, how to use words more reasonable and widening my ideas. Actually, I have not had good performance in this semester. I have made many mistakes. I used grammar uncorrectly or used wrong verds’ position as well as adjective and noun. My ideas are not often clear and limited, so my writing is very boring without much creativity and many evidences. Besides, because I now base on Internet so much, it seems to be difficult for me to make new ideas and write at class, which results in the fact that my paragraph isnot perfect and good. Sometimes I really feel depressed and donot know what I should do. Thanks to my writing teacher, however, I have improved quite a lot. For example, I donot use wrong phrases “such as”, “ result in” and so on and adjectives’ position as well as how to use comma splice in contrast and…

I have always had struggles and difficulties when it comes to writing. This is due to the fact that English is not my first language, and that I am still learning. I started to learn how to speak, and listen, and mainly write in English when I was in ninth grade. Writing has been the hardest to deal with it, because I have many spelling and mechanical errors and most importantly, how to organize an essay, but this changed when I took English 49 with Professor Lucero. In my first day of class, I was assigned to write an essay about my experience with writing. I was not completely sure on how to start my essay and how to organize it. When I was in High School, I did not write many essays, and the few I did, I have endless help. So, I just my…

After I come to college, I learn how to write an essay in English. I did several writing including arguments, personal essays, and research paper. I also learned how to build sentences and paragraphs. The limitation of the English vocabulary made it hard for me to put my thoughts together and clear about certain subject to present it to my audience. I also face difficulties with grammar, specifically with sentence structure. I am always confused what type of sentence I should use, or how to word and punctuate a sentence to express the idea I want. I struggle in transitions throughout paragraphs and thoughts, and give my papers a smoothness that I would like to.…

The beginning of high school I was a seed in English class. I was not particularly good at English and had doubts on whether I should ask the teacher to move me down to the college prep class. Just like a seed, I was a plain little student sitting in an honors class. Maybe from last year’s English class, I was fully aware my writing was not anything special. That was what I thought because I compared myself to my friends, but for sure, one thing I was positive was that writing was my strength in English rather than vocabulary and reading comprehension. With a portfolio with all my past essays in front of me on my desk, I flipped through it. I noticed that my essays were not well-organized, and I had trouble with structuring my essays. However, at the same time, I saw that I had a variety of transitions, and clear topic sentences. The topic sentences were not creative because it was in a basic format, but I knew she could work on that the upcoming year. Thanks to the portfolio that my teacher handed out at the start of the school year, I was able to realize that my writing can change and believed that if I put time and effort through the year, my writing may become a flower one day and bloom beautifully. I sat down in that classroom, day after day, learning new ways to improve. Eventually, almost a year of 9th grade passed.…

Before taking English 101A, I was not confident in my writing ability. I never was able to wrap my head around what I was supposed to do and often wrote off topic. I would spend too much time looking at the screen thinking of what to write. My essays often turned out to be a summary; this was reoccurring. I feel that this class strongly helped me develop some standard and basic skills for writing an essay. The amount of time we spent breaking down each of the three essays was very helpful for me. It helped me really realize that I need to get into deeper thought to correctly analyze the text and put it on paper. I have obtained the knowledge from learning in the classroom that acquiring the ability to thoroughly analyze, make points for my body paragraphs, create a thesis, etc., is much simpler than I made it for myself prior. I now realize that I overthought too much while writing essays. I used to try to perfect every sentence as I wrote or typed. I found myself using so much time doing this. I found that just writing my ideas and thoughts down first, while ignoring diction, punctuation, and the flow of the sentences, and revising after made for a much more efficient and successful process. My experience in this class has really opened my eyes to realize that essay writing is a much simpler process than I thought it to be.…

I first came to the U.S at the age of twelve 6 years ago in April 2005 from Somalia to the state of Minnesota. I came here not knowing the English language or the alphabet. I really had a hard time in school; especially the first day of school. I didn’t know how to talk to my teachers or classmates. I only answered questions by saying “yes” or “no” and by nodding my head. That was my only way of communicating. Then my mom hired a tutor that can help me learn the language and be able to keep up with the other students. He was tutoring me 3 days a week and was helping me with my ESL classes. Even though I was taking ESL classes, I was still having difficulties adapting to school. Little by little, it seemed that my English was getting better and so were my grades in school. I wasn’t that much behind my classmates, but my classmates were still ahead of me. In my 3rd year of taking ESL classes, my counselor told me that I didn’t need to take those classes anymore and that my English improved stunningly in just 3 years. I was able to take regular classes with regular students and didn’t need a tutor anymore. When I started taking classes, I was scoring higher on tests than my classmates. In Math, students were asking me to help them solve problems they couldn’t understand. In a short amount of time, I became one of the top students in class. I was one of those who other students expected to pass a test and score the highest. Once, I was ranked 6th in a class of 30 students. That was my junior year in high school. After that, I applied for a program called “Genesys Works”. It provides training for a period of 8 weeks during the summer before your senior in both professional and IT skills. At the beginning of your senior year, you’ll be working in a company such as Accenture or 3M as an intern. I was able to succeed in the program and earn an internship at Best Buy Accenture and at the same time they help you apply to colleges and…

Lacking experience in writing and reading, English is my most feared subject. It is the one and only vulnerable spot in my otherwise invincible academic armor. I hate writing and I despise reading. Other than magazines, I cannot recall reading anything since "The Crucible" which was a teacher assigned book in my sophomore high school English class. Not that I read a lot before that, I don't remember reading any books in my middle school years neither. Now, with this writing assignment since a long time, my brain feels like an old rusty engine of an 81 Porsche cranking up for the first time in years, readying to compete in the English 1A heat.

My parents and my favorite math teacher always told me that I'm a very bright individual and my accomplishments in other subjects prove that. I approached and conquered the subjects of math, science, and history like a paladin in gold, yet faced with writing, I would coward in fear. To me, writing equals to nothing more than stress and frustration. A useless hassle and senseless boredom which I thought was too stupid to waste effort on. Therefore I have shied away from this department for as long as I can remember and focused all my energy toward the areas I have strength and faith in.

The writing compartment in my brain is very restricted. I lack flexibility in the use of words and phrases. A typical sentence of mine, starts with "I", "It", "Because", "The", "But", "Therefore". It is extremely difficult for me to think of new ways to begin sentences or use sophisticated sentence patterns which I see in other people's essays. But when it comes to grammar, I am extremely proud because there are usually no corrections on the essays my teachers hand back, or maybe it's because they're too lazy to correct them.

When I'm actually writing, I write as fast as a turtle can crawl. A 2 page essay usually takes me around 6 hours to finish. My teacher once told me to use a process called brainstorming which I tried…

Ever since I was young, writing has never been my strong point. I never divulged into the writing process as much as I have completed for this particular course called writing 101. Without structural organization, all the essays I have written so far lacked the impact that good, strong essays usually show. Back then when I was in my school, my writing teacher way of teaching me is very conventional. Every day, in class, whenever we are doing our writing class, the teacher will simply gives us a topic to write on. Before we start on writing, the students will be given chance to brainstorm on the idea, then, show it to teacher, if the teacher did not like the idea, we will have to change it and we will have to show it again to the teacher until she find it rational. I also discovered I don’t know how to elaborate on the essay and never reread the essay if it made sense or not. For example, the Immigration essay. The content of my piece needs more transition words and more elaboration to support my ideas. I just wrote it to get it done and I couldn’t think of anything else to write about. However, the content was following the assignment that Mrs. C assigned because I had 1 paragraph, details to support my topic, and 1 conclusion to end my essay. Whenever I'd be in class I would feel so lost because it’d take me a while to grasp exactly what was going on while the other students were ahead. This has affected my academic achievement in high school because it has challenged me to put in my efforts to achieve my goal, which has been to be accepted into the college I desire. Considering that it is required for students to pass four years of English, my path to succeeding that has been rough, but I’ve managed to work through it and give it my all. The language barrier has allowed me to think differently in the sense of being able to think in one language and say it in another. Unfortunately, that’s where my problem has been. Since I am bilingual, some times whenever I want to express or explain something it’s really hard for me to figure out how to put my thoughts into words and make it clear enough to where people understand me. Now referring back to my troubles in English class, I think that because it’s been tough for me to explain myself, it has played a part in the lack of strength in my writing. However, overtime I believe that because this has been such a challenging issue for me it has also been my motivation to keep on going even though it may seem too difficult at first. Reflecting upon myself, I can certainly say that I’ve improved my English comprehension and speech skills compared to my past…

The essay we first wrote was the introduction essay, it was simply to get to know different interesting things about each student and get a feel for how we all write. On this paper I did well writing all about fostering kittens back home with my family. My details were good, I had a clever title, and my word choices really helped not make the paper repetitive, all of this good content I had in my paper put me at a grade of 90% on this paper. I struggled with a few smalls things on the first paper of the semester, punctuation was a slight struggle, I needed to not use exclamation marks and know when to spell out numbers. My punctuation problem also overflowed into major problems I had on this paper, which were commas. Commas were something I had a big problem with the whole semester, the problem dwindled as we kept writing, but this problem was most prominent in this first introductory paper. Another large problem I had was using words like I and you throughout my paper. To revise this paper I took out the you and Is I had put in there. I also not only checked twice, but three times for comma mistakes.…
