Things Fall Apart Chapter 1-14 Summary
The conversation that starts Chapter 13 is not centered around Ender but rather his siblings Peter and Valentine. Two American I.F. officers unknown to the reader are discussing the Wiggin children due to the reasoning that the I.F. has finally caught on to their true identity, Demosthenes, and Locke. Instead of confronting the children the I.F. officers follow Graff’s advice, which is to do nothing and let them continue since they have caused no real harm or damage to the structure of the I.F. and may actually be correct about their political ideals. Graff clarifies to Ender why he is on Earth alluding to the idea that he wants him to remember what he is fighting for, the lives of his loved ones, which he knows Ender will hate him for since he used Valentine and the Earth yet again for influential purposes. While awaiting launch Ender briefly thinks that there is a chance that Graff may actually care for him, but he comes up with the resulting idea that nearly everything is calculation with Graff. On the voyage to Eros, the location of the I.F. command center, Graff informs Ender upon all the information he needs to know about the universal enemy, the buggers. With the influx of information from Graff, Ender learns that the buggers communicate instantaneously, and from them, the humans learned and developed the technology able to d the same, known as the ansible, a device that allows ships to communicate across the vastness of the galaxy. Graff also tells Ender that all human ships have been sent out to strike on the buggers in the Third Invasion, and he is expected to be a leading commander five years from now ready to attack on the buggers. Peaked with curiosity Ender asks why they are fighting the bugger, and although Graff has no explanation, he speculates that a species that converses through thought might have a hard time understanding that humans are in fact intellectual beings.
