Introduction

Background of the study Reading comprehension is a process of attaching meaning to symbols. Each word on the printed page act as a stimulus. Directing the reader to a certain referents in his experience. A totally strange word has no value as a stimulus unless the reader can analyze it in some way that will unlock meaning in terms of his experience. A word remains meaningless if you can’t understand it. As the saying of Umberto Eco (Italian writer), “The good of a book lies in being read. A book is made up of signs that speak of other signs, which in their turn speak of things. Without an eye to read them, a book contains signs that produce no concepts; therefore it is dumb”. Reading experts defines reading comprehension as getting and giving meaning to a printed page. It includes the ability to grasp the central thoughts and the details to get the main idea that is expressed in several sentences and the interpret content and draw inference from single text paragraph. Reading is the key that unlocks the door to a world of enlightenment and enjoyment. The basic tools for learning in the content fields, 80% of the things of people do everyday involves reading, they read their daily schedule, traffic signs, advertisement, the commodities they buy and where they brought them, people read periodicals to know more about what is happening to the things that surrounds them. According to Harold Tupper “reading is the tool of the acquisitive mind; it is the vehicle for obtaining the ideas that cannot be submitted verbally”. Reading comprehension is the key to success in school or in out of school interests. To the enjoyment of leisure time and to personal and social adjustment.
