Preparation
Prerequisites
Different thesis topics may have different prerequisites. These may be Matlab programming experience, the completion of specific courses, or even a certain grade average.
Determine Research Question
Each student must determine an area and topic on which to write their thesis. A specific thesis question within this topic can then be chosen.
Find Supervisor
Both a supervisor and a co-supervisor must be found to supervise the whole project from start to finish. The supervisors would ideally be undertaking research in a similiar topic or have extensive knowledge of the topic from previous research.
Define Scope
Define the scope of the project in detail. Determine exactly what is and what isn’t included in the thesis to reduce time wasted later in the project.
Initial work
The work that is required before commencement of any new research. This is all done after the project and supervisor has been chosen.
Background reading
Research reading is conducted to become familiar with the cutting edge technologies, research and other information related to the subject area. It is critical to define what the project is related and to aims to achieve. This ensures that work has not already been carried out in similar conditions.
Timeline
This is where the timeline for the project and important deadlines, milestones and initial inchstones. It is import to recognise at this stage that the inchstones are preliminary and will be changing throughout the project.
Resources
Identify and source resources required for the completion of the project. This could include software licences or material for experiments. Additionally there may be paperwork that needs to be completed before working in a laboratory such as safety protocols and identification of
