School Canteen Operators
Be strict with school canteen operators
Despite numerous reminders to canteen operators to practise good hygiene when preparing food, some food handlers continue to ignore this ruling. There are still some operators who fail to meet the stipulated hygiene standards such as covering their food and wearing aprons, gloves and caps.A check by Streets recently found the cleanliness level at some school canteens at an average level.Although most operators wore aprons, they failed to put on gloves and caps and some even had unkempt hair.Food like chicken rice, noodles, char kway teow, nasi lemak, roti canai and assorted kuih were left uncovered, exposing them to flies and dust.A parent, who only wanted to be know as Ng, said his 14-year-old son suffered from mild food poisoning after having nasi lemak during recess in school recently."A few hours after consuming it, he started to throw up and ended up with diarrhoea. When we took him to the clinic, the doctor confirmed that my son had food poisoning."Although his condition was not serious, we are upset that the operators did not observe the cleanliness standards," he said, adding that canteen operators should not just focused on making profits.Ng said school principals, teachers and administrators should also take the effort to check their canteen and warn the operators if anything was lacking."We are aware that not all canteen operators underestimate the importance of food hygiene."We just don't want to see our children falling sick and suffering from food poisoning," said Ng, who was accompanied by a few other worried parents. The parents hoped that the state Education Department and the state Health Department would take the issue seriously and look into the matter. http://berita.cari.com.my/news.php?id=1253&lang=en IMPROVE THE CLEANLINESS OF A CANTEEN
Ministry of Education statistics reveal each year about 200 cases of poisoning occurred in the food and drinks in school canteens across the country. This

As LUC students, we are very fortunate to have food readily available to us in the dining halls. The food options off campus around LUC are minimal, so it is ideal to have halls on campus that have different foods to choose from. These halls have many different problems surrounding the specific dining experience though, which affects current and prospective students, faculty, and staff. A recent article from the Phoenix reports that the hygiene of the dining hall employees has room for improvement. A student claimed, “he saw dining hall workers go out for a cigarette and come straight back to serving food” (Beckford 1). There have been reports of bugs in the salad bar and mold in the icemakers. Also, the dining halls have received lower levels on food inspections due to temperature problems that could potentially affect anyone who eats there. Although there were reports of roaches at the University of Chicago in 2012, which is worse than any reports at LUC, it is still very important that LUC works to improve the hygiene at their dining halls (Beckford 2).…

To keep young infants healthy, staff will be required to wear disposable gloves while changing diapers, wiping noses and while serving food. Employees and children alike will be constantly reminded to wash their hands thoroughly throughout the day. A clean and healthy environment is a must.…

This act ensures that all food is handled correctly, the area where food is prepared must be clean, hands must be watched, hair should be covered and separate work areas should be used to prevent contamination of cooked and raw food. Following this regulation is especially important in health and social care settings such as schools, where young children are especially vulnerable to illness. All equipment, such as chopping boards and knives should be cleaned after every use to prevent contamination. Food staff should be well trained and know that food should stored and packed separately to prevent contamination. The Safety Regulation act simply enforces that all food should be prepared, stored and transported as safely and as hygienically possible.…

Foodborne illness is a major cause of personal distress, disease, death, and economic burden. Every year, millions of Americans become sick and many die from foodborne illness, and as a result, the public has become increasingly aware of, and concerned about, the safety of the food they eat. ("FDA Retail Food Safety Initiative " 1-8) The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are responsible for developing public health regulations. One of its duties is to protect the nation’s food supply. The FDA has set strict regulations that fast food restaurants must follow. These regulations include the cleanliness of the restaurant and kitchen, the…

    Food Inc.

After watching the film Food, Inc. I gain knowledge on parts of our food industry that was unknown to me. When it comes to the United States food industry our way of production in my opinion is very wrong and cruel. I know many people love meat and I’m a meat eater as well but why put the animals through this process of getting the meat. The process is very disturbing. The meat that we are receiving in the stores is not being thoroughly inspected. Many of the cows that were shown in the video were sick from malnutrition yet they were still slaughtered for ground beef and other beef portions .What is wrong with our food safety is that when there is an outbreak the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) don’t step in until it affects that whole state, the illness is severe and the food as to be a FDA regulated product as stated by the Food Safety.gov. I’m my opinion I don’t understand that process of letting the state handling food borne outbreaks until that it’s too much for them then getting the FDA involved. It makes more since to get the FDA involved at the beginning so the illness wants spread as much and want affect as many people. As stated by the U.S. Department of health Studies and FDA they are having a hard time trying to decrease food borne illness breakouts because there is a increase in consumer demand for food that is less processed and in return that makes food distribution more complex when trying to find the source of the illness or the cause for the outbreak. So basically until they can be able to break down and identify the main source of food we as a nation will always have that challenge. There is so much that goes into food production today that it’s hard for the FDA and CDC to control food borne disease and outbreaks are becoming larger than ever. Each year the FDA and CDC gather reports and compare them to previous…
