#1- What is The Thermohaline Ocean Circulation concept?
The Thermohaline Ocean Circulation is when the circulation of the ocean is caused by heat and freshwater in the sea’s surface. This causes the mixing of heat and salt in the ocean. Thermo is temperature and haline is salt. Temperature and salt are the two factors that determine the sea’s density. The circulation causes differences in seawater density. The circulation also causes warm water from the southern hemisphere to move towards the North Pole. Between Greenland and Norway, the water cools, sinks towards the deep waters, and flows back to the south.

If this were to occur, one effect would be coral bleaching. Coral bleaching happens when corals whiten due to the reduce of oxygen. During this process, the algae inside of the corals die and the coral loses its source of nutrition and dies as well. Another effect would be acidic oceans. The oceans would absorb the carbon dioxide released by humans, making them acidic. This would also have an impact on coral and their development. Species that depend on coral as food and protection, would be impacted as well. Fish, squid, and other gilled species may find it harder to breathe since the oxygen count would lessen, resulting in their death. Then fish-eating animals and humans wouldn’t have fish as a source of food. Lastly, the lifestyle and location of many marine species would be altered. Rising temperatures would affect the life cycle and behaviour of marine species. For many, temperature directly affects reproduction, so temperature could determine the successfulness in breeding. Temperature also plays a role in the number of male and female offspring made by marine turtles, fish, and copepods (tiny animals that many marine animals depend on for food).

The majority of the sun’s radiation is absorbed by the ocean. The ocean stores the sun’s radiation and distributes it to the land around it. Ocean water is continuously evaporating which cause temperature and humidity of the air around it to form rain and storms, that are then carried away by the winds. The oceans’ currents act like a conveyor belt and this is what regulates the climate. If the oceans’ currents collapsed then the coastal area’s temperatures would change

    One of the most evident examples of climate change seen within nature can be seen the coral reefs. Coral reefs are one of the most divers ecosystems on earth, but are also impacted greatly by climate change. An excellent example of these can be seen by examining the dying coral in Great Barrier Reef. There have been multiple reports on the amount of dead coral, and these reported amounts depend on the regions reported, and vary from 35-93% of the coral is dead. Looking at the entire Great Barrier Reef as an entire system, over 22% of the reef has died, and this percentage is expected to rise further. Marine biologist and climate scientist have nailed down the cause of dying coral reefs to multiple causes, but the two most significant causes have been nailed down to the increase in ocean water temperatures, and the rise of ocean water levels. The NASA data analysis have calculated that global temperatures have increased by a global average of 0.8 ℃ since 1880 resulting in average ocean temperatures to rise. Due to this increase of global temperature, and a change of weather patterns, the polar ice caps have been melting at a rapid rate and have decreased significantly in size. This has caused the average ocean water levels to rise, which in turn increasing the level water above the coral reefs. When the water level increases above the coral reefs, less sunlight makes it down to the coral reef ecosystem. This greatly impacts the coral reef ecosystem, because much of this ecosystem is dependent on sunlight in the form of photosynthesis. Not only does warmer waters directly impact the health of the coral reefs, but it also increases the rate that algae can grow. A common example of rapid growing algae can be seen in the form of Red Tides.
