Émile Zola: Thérèse Raquin In the novel, Thérèse Raquin, the author, Émile Zola, presents the reader with a story of characters that undergo the fight between free will and fate. The principle of free will is reoccurring in the realm of naturalism, which is the foundation of all of Zola’s literary works. Thérèse and Laurent, the main characters, had committed adultery, murder, and then had to deal with the consequences of their actions. Zola brings the reader to analyze what had motivated them to commit this immoral behavior and what it did to torture the rest of their lives. He presented the characters with a lack of control over their instincts which emphasized the strength of fate over one’s free will. Zola writes with a scientific approach as there are emotional events yet it is vacant of any emotion. He portrayed the characters as human brutes and their functioning resembled that of a machine. This principle of fate overpowering free will had an impact on the characters lives both physically and morally as it is evident throughout their miserable existence preceding their crimes. The consequences of their animalistic actions left them with horror filled hallucinations, physical ailments, unhealthy relationships, and no will to live. Zola explains this questionable behavior by attributing a lack of control over their decisions and a 3 of emotion in their reaction to what they had done. This brings the reader to discover this battle between one’s free will and the uncontrollable fate present in their lives Without free will, the characters, especially Laurent and Thérèse have lost hope in gaining control over their lives. They were having an affair and viewed Camille’s existence as a burden, and this instinct drove them to their actions. In a sane mind, that would not seem like a rational evaluation of a situation. This reoccurring lack of control over their immediate

    Meursault’s reactions are rarely what the reader envisions as appropriate. People feel disconnected-- disheartened and confused-- when Meursault claims his Maman’s death “doesn’t mean anything” (3).     This story further adds to the theme of absurdism throughout the novel because there was no reason for the son to die such as there was no reason for the Arab to die. During Meursault’s trial, there is an attempt to create a reason for his crime despite there not being one. Unlike the philosophy of absurdism, the court believes in reason and order which leads to the establishment of a cause for Meursault’s crime even if it is false. Once Meursault is sentenced to death, he realizes that he no longer has the choice between life and death that all humans are given in life. He instead has death as his only “choice”.     Literary writers incorporate narrative elements in order to convey the flaws of humanity in society, such as gender or class based issues. The Wife of Martin Guerre, by Janet Lewis, portrays the individual’s struggles in feudalist, sixteenth century France and delves into the issues of a complete authoritarian rule, the place of women in patriarchal societies, and the concepts of family honour, justice, truth and love.     Many literary classics explore the way in which fate is inevitable. August Strindberg’s infamously controversial play Miss Julie, written in 1888, pertains to that specific group of literary classics. His play tells the story of Julie, the daughter of a count and a commoner, who is driven by a desire to be apart of the lower social class. Overcome by her physical sexual needs but also the temptation of lowering herself socially, she goes to bed with her servant, Jean. This series of events leads to her suicide at the closing of the play.     They become almost obsessed with each other. Their opposing temperaments balance each other out and put each of them in a state of blissfulness and tranquility. It’s as though “Nature and circumstances seemed to have made this man for this woman, and to have driven them towards one another. Together, the woman, nervous and dissembling, and the man, lustful, living like an animal, they made a strongly united couple. They complemented one another, they protected one another” (43). The idea Laurent has animal like tendencies is a recurring motif in Therese Raquin, which is one of the traits for a person with a Sanguine temperament. Like an animal he does only what benefits him and acts on all of his impulses, which are some traits that are later adopted by Therese through their relationship. By being in a relationship with someone of an opposite temperament, their individual temperaments get balanced out as they change and integrate the other person’s temperament into their own. Their obsession of each other becomes so intense that they are both willing to take any measures to ensure that they can be together at all times to satisfy their desire and hunger for each other. This infatuation is what leads them to murdering Camille, which also develops the plot and brings it to its climax. Therese’s old nervous and reserved character would not be capable of committing such an act and neither would Laurent because his selfish nature would prevent him from putting himself in risk of losing his comfortable life. They both change one another’s character, which influences them to behave differently. Their actions then determine their fate. After murdering Camille everything goes downhill for them. They lose the equilibrium in their relationship and both become extremely neurotic and fearful of everything. They no longer make each other happy, but instead…

    In the story “Desiree’s Baby” it shows how Armand is impulsive when he fell in love with Desiree instantaneously. It was at the same pillar where Monsieur Valmonde, her adopted father, found her and her new life begun and ironically it is the same place Armand fell in love with her, signifying another life, one where she will be given an identity. “He was reminded that she was nameless. What did it matter about a name when he could give her one of the oldest and proudest in Louisiana?” He did not care if Desiree loved him back. Their marriage was hasty and intense and had a short life span. It was one that inflicted pain and was destructive both physically and emotionally.
